Tru Sharp stainless-is it worth the convenience? I've heard rave reviews of the chrome vanadium with regard to ease of sharpening, and edge'holding, but I'd like to hear if their surgical stainless is up to par. any remarks would be appreciated- thanks

"Tru Sharp" is apparently 420HC which is used by Buck as well. As with the buck knives my cases sharpen easily enough and take a very sharp edge. Neither blade holds the edge as well as the ATS's, 440C or 1095 blades that I have in other pocket knives though.

Personally, I dont much care for the stainless Case knives. They dont stay sharp very long at all. Plus, I love the way the chrome vanadium steel takes on that blueish patina after cutting a bunch of fruit and onions and stuff. Kinda like your Grandpa's old pocketknife. Just make sure you keep them oiled down and wiped off. As a plus, Case is now starting to make more of the chrome vanadium bladed knives in handles other than the yellow plastic stuff. I picked up a beautiful brown bone Texas jackknife with big clip and pen blades, double pinched bolsters and only paid about $35 for it. Not bad for something that should last the rest of my life, if properly cared for.

Thanks-sounds like Chrome Vanadium it is. I have one further question, How quickly does it rust? How much care is necessary to prevent that? and do you know what the makeup of the steel is? thanks!

Insufficient data exist to answer your question. 'Chrome vanadium' is such a vague term that predicting how it will perform, or what it elemental constituents are is futile, although I tend to agree that it is bound to be better than 420HC, which is a horrible very low alloy steel.

I suggest you contact Case: http://www.wrcase.com/ is their website. E-mail them about the elemental composition of their chrome vanadium steel, and share the knowledge with us.

Halycon,
If you have'nt already got an answer to your question from Case yet, maybe you could go over to KFC at www.knifeforums.com and ask Shirley on the W.R.Case & Sons forum.
She seems to be very helpful if the answer is available to her.
Also, I don't quite understand why, but there seems to be alot of mystery (on Case's part) regarding metal content of their knives.
