Case Stockman Size Comparison...

Well, I am getting married in October, and I want to get my groomsmen something special to show my appreciation to them.

As of now, I plan on getting them Case medium black G10 Stockmans, with stainless blades. I prefer carbon, but not all of them will care for a carbon steel blade properly, so stainless is just easier.

Anyway, I carry a large Stockman (bone/CV) everyday. I was hoping that someone would have a pic handy of a medium next to a large, so I can get a handle on the size of these things.

Also, as somewhat of a slipjoint newb, I was looking for opinions of which blade to have their first initial and last name engraved on? The main blade on the medium Stockman looks kind of skinny.

Any replies will be greatly appreciated! I cant wait to give these to the guys. I think they will really like them.

G-10 is a fine choice and the as ground brushed stainless finish blades are just right with these handles.

No photo skills at all here but the Medium is a lot smaller than the Large, but it's very pocket practical and is in no way under sized or toy like.

If you MUST have them engraved, then the spey or sheepfoot is better. I'd actually suggest you present each knife with a personal card of thanks&appreciation to your groomsmen and don't get them engraved. Most knife enthusiasts don't like engravings on the blades...it's very personal of course. I heard of somebody who presented handkerchief/bandoliers with each knife with the initials sewn on the cloth. A polishing cloth could have the same thing too! Adds to cost though.
Good luck for the future!

Medium Texas Jack (real close in size to my medium stockman/just add a sheepsfoot blade) in amber bone CV next to a Large stockman in Bone Stag CV.

I'll see if I can find one better.

Here are some images with various Case stockmen in them. The black G10 medium stockman is on the 18 pattern, which is the same as the pocketworn red bone knife in the center of the two pictures with three knives in them. It will have the same "as ground finish" as the G10 humpack whittler and pruner, which is nice.

That baby blue tiny muskrat has to go. It sticks out like a sore thumb in my Case collection. (It was a gift)

I gave away knives to my wedding party. If you want non knife people to carry and use a knife, I believe a smaller one to be better for them. a larger one would bother them carrying them in their pockets. 3 1/4 to 3 3/8 would be ideal. I think natural handle materials would be more appealing too. Case has natural handles in stainless. Bone and stag are pretty much maintainence free I think.

Andy whats that Case on the very bottom? I like the swedge on the pen blade. Do yopu have more pictures of it?

Thanks Andy. I wonder if the humback stockman has the same crispness.

I have handled the stockman in red bone/ CV, and it is just as nice. The blades are not "as ground" like the G10 version, which is what gives that nice crispness. But you wouldn't want that as-ground finish on a CV blade, you would have major rust problems. Those grind marks are pretty deep.

One thing to note about the humpbacks, they have much tighter springs than most current-production Cases. They're beefy knives, almost like a Case/ GEC hybrid.

I'm thinking about picking up one of the red CV humpback stockmen sometime soon. I have a long list, and limited funds though. Case makes too many nice knives (not that I'm complaining). :D

Here's a hijacked image of the red CV humpback, so folks can see what we're talking about:

I would suggest the medium stockman also. As for the engraving I personally think that is a great idea, BUT some might feel they could never use the knife then. Black G-10 is nice but I think orange is better! LOL I love orange. :D

I just noticed something while going back through this thread. This is not a stockman, unless it's some kind of newfangled "whittler stockman"::o My apologies. I can't believe I didn't notice that.

This is a humpback stockman:

I picked up a medium stockman pattern I didn't have yet on Friday. This is the 47 pattern. It is a nice one. It's a bit larger than the other mediums, and has 3 backsprings, so it's a substantial knife. I like it!
