I'm looking for a slip joint; mainly because I don't really have any knives of this type. I like the classic looks, and want to try something new. I will carry and use it however.

Slip joints have never been a primary interest of mine, and I don't know a whole lot about them. I figured I couldn't go wrong with a Case.

I'm looking to spend about $50 and would prefer carbon steel, but stainless is fine also. I'm thinking maybe a large stockman pattern. Any suggestions? I've found a few, but it's hard to narrow it down.

I seem to remember that Case once offer G10 handles. Does anyone know if these are still available?

Thanks!

There are some G10 knives available here and there. I'm not sure what might be available in a stockman pattern. A quick search at a favorite supplier turned up a couple medium stockman knives, but none of them were in CV.

There is an amber bone medium stockman in CV available pattern no. 63032CV and also in Chestnut bone. Both of these are under $50 and a great size. My supplier doesn't list items they can't get and don't have in stock.

The knife you link in your post should be a good one if you like a large stockman.

Thanks Ed!

The G10 ones seem a bit difficult to find.

Who is your favorite supplier?

I have a case large stockman. It's a great knife but it's on the big/bulky side. It don't stop me from carrying it tho. If you want something a bit smaller I would get a med stockman or a Texas jack. I like the Texas jack better myself because the sleepfoot blade don't dig in my hand when I'm using the main blade. The large one doesn't feel bad, but the small-med stockmans could be uncomfortable.

Its easy to get overwhelmed by the number of different classic slipjoint patters available, and the variations of blade and handle material in each. If you have already settled on the Large Stockman pattern, the handle material is really the main choice and that's purely cosmetic so no one else can really decide that for you. I will say that personally I find the Large Stockman pattern to be right on the edge of pocket carry-able. YMMV, of course, but I find the Med. Stockman more comfortable in the pocket, and the Large Stockman more comfortable in a belt sheath.

I seem to remember that Case once offer G10 handles.
AFAIK, the G-10 handles were a limited run and are currently OOP, but there still seem to be quite a few floating around the supply chain, new (I see a few G-10 Stockman knives on eBay currently). I think only the Med. Stockman was ever made in G-10 and came in either Orange or Black. I've got Large Trappers in both colors and really like them.

Who is your favorite supplier?
I've delt with both commercial vendor links removed per forum guidelines for Case knives. In my experience, both offer very good selections, good serivce and decent prices.

As already mentioned, Case does not offer G10 and carbon steel in the same knife.

Here are a couple more links that might help.

Folks, this thread makes it apparent that a review of the forum guidelines regarding vendor links and endorsements (in this sub-forum) is needed...Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with them. Thanks.

I also recomend the 63032. At 3 5/8th its big enough and rides well in your pocket. Case knives have a nice hollow grind too.

I have a Case hunter with three blades, a main clip or trapper type blade and a gut hook along with a saw. Its hunter orange G10 for scales. Wonderful folder, a bit heavy in the pocket but CV and a great knife nonetheless.

As for your Stockman idea. I have owned the Case Stockmans and find the medium 3318 Case Stockman to be about as good as it gets. Very pocketable this one! Its also as flawless for flush opened and closed, good snap on all blades, and seems pretty well built for the money. The yellow handles may be a turn off but overall they don't take too much away from the otherwise top shelf quality of everything else about the model.

CASE Large stockman in Amber Bone cv is a very fine knife to have, 3 very decent blades but it is a bit heavy in trouser pocket, in a coat though, it's no problem-more of a 'winter knife' as it were.

The Medium Stockman with Serpentine handle 6318 is a very good all-rounder, see if you can find one in Bonestag 6.5 as that's a carbon blade(CV). Mind you, there's nothing wrong with their stainless either for everyday tasks. I like the slim Turkish Clip blade on this model. The OP mentioned G-10, I'd just like to recommend the CASE Slimline Trapper that comes in this material, looks so nice with the brass pins as contrast! Very good pocket knife anyway, 4.25" but very slim and singe blade, one of the best slicers around.

One thing about Case, there are a lot of options, even though some aren't still in production. A lot of them can easily be found in your price range on the secondary market, with CV...

The Case 6375 is a terrific large stockman at about 4 1/4 inches. When you have it in hand, you know you are holding a knife :D The 6347 which is my personal preference over the 18 series, is right around 3 7/8 inches.

Another knife you might consider is the Schrade Old Timer 8OT stockman. I'll
have to pull one out and check, but IIRC they are around 4 inches closed. The 34OT is the same knife, just smaller. Similar in size to the Case 18 series.

You can't get the good U.S made ones new anymore though, because Schrade unfortunately went out of business a few years back.
They are readily available though, and can be found in like new condition for 30 - 35 dollars. Schrade used 1095 steel and they did a terrific job with it, and they are very well made knives. They don't have the perrty scale options like you can get with a Case, but the delrin scales are very durable.

There are a few folks on here that replace scales on slip joints too, so if you found a knife you really like, you could always have g-10 scales put on it

You might want to take a look at the Case Humpback patterns as well.

There is a Stockman version and a Whittler version which are both nicely designed patterns.

The Whittler is offered in Black G10 but the Stockman is not. I believe the Whittler is also offered in carbon steel. Not sure about the Stockman version. Both have several different handle materials to choose from.
