MY wife said pick one but im so torn. If you had to carry just one, would you pick the 2.5 inch sway back jack which is nice looking...OR the ever usefull Rare red alox farmer, with the usual assortment of handy tools. Which would you pick???

If I already had a Vic, I'd surely take the SBJ. If not, the Vic is a great daily asset to have at hand!

I carry the regular (silver) alox farmer. It's a "James Bond" gentleman's knife on a PBR budget. It's the only knife which goes with me pretty much every day (I have a rotation of locking folders). Besides being very useful, I get loads of compliments from both knife lovers as well as non knife people. The alox line looks like a very high end line to most people.

The Vic should be real nice esp in red Alox..... so its a a hard çhoice .... if the SBJ has nice bone and CV blades id be leaning that way.

I have both - The Case is a very well made and beautiful knife. The Victorinox has a lot more functional abilities.

You'll get more satisfaction from the Case when you pull it out of your pocket and play with it.

You'll get more satisfaction from the Vic when you pull it out to use it for functions that cannot be resolved by the use of the blade alone.

Either one will be a quality piece of cutlery.

I own, enjoy and carry both and that sums up my thoughts to a T. The SWJ is by far the nicest Case production knife to come along in at least a couple of decades. The Vic farmer is significantly cheaper. Both should serve you well. If you are going to use the tools a lot get the vic. If you will be using the blades and not the tools very often. I would pic the swj.

What makes it so hard, is the fact that the bone case is very goodlooking; but the alox farmer is so damn handy.......ughhhh..its like sayin who would you rather date a hot blond with huge lips or a brunet whos cute but also can do a tune up and adjust the valves on your jeep cj.

Its not "either or". Just pick one to get first, and then get the other later.

I have both, but would go with the Farmer first. Consider this: its a lot easier to find a SBJ next month or next year than it is to find a red Farmer. The latter is no longer in production and is relatively scarce. I tried to corner the market on Farmers back in the day, when they were making them in blue and red, and could be had for ~$20.

You can't compare a SWJ and an alox farmer to this! Everyone knows that lips eventually sag so you should immediately pick the one that can fix your jeep. A good mechanic is so hard to find.
Oh, and I say go with the alox farmer. More useful overall. Now if only you can teach it to work on the jeep......

I have both. If you ever open a bottle..........

If you are going to use the Farmer a lot, you might want to get a silver one. The red looks cooler, but will show scuffs the first time you bang it on something. I treat my colored aloxes as light carry knives, and the silver ones as users.

If I could only have one. It would be the farmer for sure. I carried one for several years in conjunction with a large one hand knife.
I recently replaced the Farmer with a Leatherman Wingman, but that's beside the point.
In my mind, if you carry and use the Red Alox Farmer that's great. You can pass it on to one of your kids and they'll have a great folder with a lot of character. My sister still carries my dad's old red alox soldier. It's sort of pink now.

I LOVE the red alox when they are worn and have a nice patina. Funny how some things get better with age...

Case SBJ. The CV version in Chestnut bone.

IMO, it's one of the best knives made for the price. And you don't know how long it will be around in CV steel, but the Farmer will be made for many more years.

I carry a black alox pioneer, but have a blue alox farmer, and a chestnut SBJ. Get both and be done with it. You'll enjoy both immensely.

which is a better edc

"Better" is completely subjective. Only Mr. RubyFan can determine what is best for Mr. RubyFan. If you like the look, feel and aesthetics of a traditional slipjoint, you get one of them. If you like utility in a very flat configuration, you get the other.

Carry both. There will come a time when you're faced with doing something critical that will wreck the SBJ, but the Farmer will shrug off.

If you think that combination will weigh you down too much (or you don't regularly need a saw), swap the Farmer for a Pioneer or Cadet.

THe sbj is just an amazing knife, I have never heard of anyone disliking one. I love case, for the price i just dont think you can do better.
