Case Swayback Jack - Pins Protruding?

Hi all,

Just got my swayback jack in the mail just now and was giving it a look over and noticed that the pins aren't sunk into the scale, is that normal? I only have one other Case to compare it to, a wharncliffe mini trapper, and the pins are completely sunk into the scale. If you look at the swayback from the spine, you can clearly see the heads of all the pins raising up (I can provide pictures if it'd help). If this is norm for Case and/or the swayback, then I'm fine with it. I just don't want to on a settle on the rare dud that happened to sneak through QC, especially after hearing about the extremely high quality that is put into this particular model.

On my SBJ, the two pins that hold the backspring are slightly larger and protrude but they are rounded so it's not a problem. The two small pins that hold only the scales are sanded flush with the scales.

Seems that if the pins were spun down to flush on the scales that you would be fine.

But if you are worried about you knife looking like the other examples of this knife, search the group as there are many, many pictures of this model posted from happy owners. You could compare yours pretty easily to other examples of the finishing of that particular model.

The two larger ones fall in line with how you describe your's. As for the smaller pins, the set that is up towards the bolster are flush while the other set do protrude to the extent that you can easily catch your fingernail on it when sliding it across as well as see it when looking at the knife from the spine.

In the grand scheme, when holding it as I would for cutting, you can't feel any of them at all. But when fondling and playing with it, certainly noticeable. Hmmmm...

That doesn't sound good.

The two SBJs I have (stainless Bermuda Green, cv Chestnut) have two large domed pins, two small flat headed pins. The smaller ones do not protrude when you feel the handles, you feel the jigging not raised pins!

I've found these knives to be of excellent finish, sorry to hear of your experience.

Here's a picture from looking down at the top side of the blades.

(Those are the small flat pins...)
