Good morning everyone! I was wondering if anyone could provide any information on a particular Case Trapper for me. It is a 1989, pattern 54 with curly maple handles, I believe. On the clip point blade, "Black Oak no. 2" is etched on it. The other blade has "Black Gold" etched on it. Any additional information, or history, that you could provide would certainly be appreciated. Thanks.

You need to post lots of pictures of it and your best bet for finding information about it may be in the Bernard Levine forum. Sounds like a nice knife.

This is completely speculative, but I was searching on the etched phrases mentioned in the OP ("Black Oak No. 2" and "Black Gold"). Seeing some references to both phrasings in search results related to coal mining*. The etch and/or knife might've been a commemorative or SFO (Special Factory Order) targeted for sale in that industry, or in coal-mining regions of the country. Might contact a certain non-BF member Case dealer in Tennessee for help with that one. This sort of commemorative SFO's are their bread and butter. ;)

Contacting Case directly might also be helpful, if they made these as part of an SFO for someone.

( *Edit: 'Black Oak No. 2' may be a reference to a specific coal mine of the same name, in Pennsylvania. )

Thanks for the info guys. I don't know that I have the equipment or the knowledge to post any pictures though. I'm just an old knife guy without a digital camera or computer doing the best that I can with my cell phone. I appreciate the responses though. Keep'em coming BF!
