Case trapper input?

Hey y'all, I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on a case trapper and a leather sheath for it. My granpa loves case and says they are very good knives. I plan on using it for daily cutting tasks around the house and light chores in the woods. How strong of a folder is it and does anyone have any special recommendations on which type to get? Thank you

I personally prefer Case's CV to their Tru-Sharp stainless but that limits the handle options. You might want to also consider a trapper from GEC which tend to be a step up in quality, or a Case trapperlock which gives you the convenience of a modern blade while keeping the aesthetics of a traditional.

Whatever you go with I think you will be satisfied, both companies make good knives. Take a look around the traditional forums, something might catch your eye. Also check out the traditionals for sale on the exchange, if you buy from there you can usually catch a better price and see the actual knife you are purchasing.

the trapper should handle any cutting chores you throw at it. I also prefer the CV steel, but their ss ain't bad.

I love the trapper, or i used to before i moved to frame locks. Either of their steels will do very well, but as everyone else, i prefer the CV to the stainless. It seems to get sharper and hold an edge longer, although not by a huge amount.

I would think Case would expand the CV line of knives with the amount of people{including myself} who prefer CV over stainless.

I'm pretty sure it's only people like us who obsess over knives that prefer the CV. For the average Joe that doesn't even know how to sharpen a knife, all they see is a blade that rusts.

You have three choices to make. How much do you want to spend? Do you want stainless steel or chrome vanadium steel? And what type of handle material appeals to you?

CV steel can rust and will tend to develop a patina (grayish color) over time. This just means you need to do a little care and maintenance along the way. Some people prefer the CV steel specifically because of the patina appearance, which gives it that well-used look over time. Case Tru-sharp stainless steel is pretty much maintenance free. Depending on your sharpening skills, CV is a bit easier to get a sharp edge on. The SS tends to develop more of a burr when sharpening that takes some work to remove. But the difference is pretty slim. Either will take a good edge.

Not all handle materials are available in both steels. So if you decide you like Chestnut Jigged bone then you are stuck with CV steel. If you like a Pocket Worn Old Red bone then you're stuck with SS. Yellow Delrin and Amber Jigged Bone are available in both steels.

If you're looking to save money, then the yellow Delrin and jigged brown or jigged blue synthetics are the least expensive and can be had for under $40, but in general the standard offerings would be under $50 unless you get into some of the limited editions or stag handles.

Me personally, I'd go for either the yellow Delrin or Chestnut Jigged Bone in CV, or the yellow Delrin or Pocket Worn Old Red Bone in SS, but that's just due to my personal tastes.

Hey y'all thanks for all the replies....and yes I do prefer cv over stainless any day of the week. The yellow looks nice but I'm more of a bone or stag looking person myself. It just looks more like a piece of history that way(I am kind of old school). What would y'all say about the durability? Are they the same Case that my grandfather and father knew or have they declined at all?

The oldest case knives I own are from the 80's and would say the modern ones are a step up from that era.
They are plenty tough enough to be put to work but most of the ones I have owned or handled tend to have rub marks on the blades. If you are going to be using them then this probably won't be much of a problem since they will patina and get scuffed anyway.

Right now I have a case stockman that I threw in my bag because I'm less worried about it getting scratched and I carry my GEC western trapper in burnt stag in my pocket because I want to keep her pretty.
