I don't have any classic slippie knives and was thinking of a stag handle case trapper, the large one. Would appreciate any feedback you could pass on. Thanks

Case's knives are very nice for a sheeple friendly blade in addition to a one hand opening folder, if you're going to use it I'd suggest to find one with CV steel(1095/1085 with added Chromium and Vanadium), the tru-sharp steel works fine but doesn't have as good edge retention.

Do you know what kind of steel tru-sharp really is?

That would be a real nice knife, Case knives are great. IMO I like CV steel better also.

I think Tru-sharp is 420 HC

The trapper is a great model.

I have a number of Case knives and love them.

The CV steel does hold an edge better, but I regularly carry a Case stockman with stainless blades. It holds an edge well enough for what i use it for, but I also touch up the edge regularly.

I have the Blue bone trapper with masonic shield and Tru sharp blades. I would agree with the rest. The tru sharp is nice, but the CV is a better steel.

I hope I don't get too many people jumping on me for this but I'm not a fan of Case knives. I bought a Medium Stockman in CV not too long ago and was not impressed. The fit and finish weren't great but that didn't bother me too much. I could not for the life of me get the knife sharp. Now I'm no pro at sharpening, I just use a Sharpmaker for beveled edges and it works great on the rest of my knives. The Case just came out toothy and rough. I thought the springs were a bit weak as well.

I know this is based on one $30 knife but with a reputation like Case has maybe my expectations were too high. I almost get the feeling that their knives (at least now-a-days) are made more as collectibles than users.

Just my two cents. Please don't beat me up too much.

My Case butterbean in stainless came sharp as a razor!

But my Antique bone stockman in CV was not so sharp. I was able to touch up the stockman and it hald an xcellent edge, but that little canoe was one of the sharpest factory blades I ever received!

smcclown05 - you should contact Case and see what they can do for you.

As far as Case stainless steel goes, for practical purposes, it works just fine. It doesn't hold an edge as well as their CV, but it holds a good edge long enough between sharpenings that it shouldn't be a problem.

For sentimental reasons (I like a nice patina on carbon steel blades) I'd go for CV.

thx - cpr

Personally, I'm not a fan of stag (the handles on stag Cases are noticably thicker than the bone ones) but the Large Trapper is my favorite pattern and I own several. You can't really go wrong is you are looking for a nice, traditional pocket knife.

OK, I got my case stag trapper and proceeded to check it out. First thing I noticed both blades had side to side play. Next thing I noticed was that the spey blade had a rear strong spring, good walk and talk. Next checking the clip blade had a very weak spring, closed very weakly. So I oiled both blades up very good and opened and closed the clip blade bout a 100 times and it got to working better. Then I noticed the clip blade was hitting the back spring and left 2 very pronounced dull spots on the edge. Next thing I noticed was that the stag was very different on either side. I have been used to having benchmade and spyderco knives and most have been very flawless. Needless to say, I called the company I ordered it from and am returning it today. A very good company by the way. I told them to just refund my money and there will be no more case knives in my collection. I believe most people that buy case just puts them up and collects them. I was very dissappointed. The retail price on this knife was $141.00 dollars and I paid $84.00. You can buy some really good knives for this price.

sorry you got a bum knife, trust me and countless others not all case knives are flawed and none of the 5 case knives i own are or have been safe queens:D Shame your first experience had to be a negative one... i just know i dont go through too many days without something CV and yeller in my pocket:D
cheers
