Do these knives inherently have weak closing snap due to locking back spring?

Mine closes from by it self from 1/2 way with a snap. It's not a strong snap, but I don't have to put the blade into place. I'd guess about a 3, maybe.
Hope that helps.

Mine (2017 in yellow Delrin) has good snap. From fully open, if I hold pressure on the lock it will drop with gravity to the 90 degree point. Without holding the lock it takes only slight pressure to move the blade to the 90 degree point. from 90 to about 45 degrees it takes increasing pressure to overcome the spring, then it suddenly breaks and closes with a "SNAP!". It has a good, solid sound, probably because there's quite a bit of mass that's moving and then coming to a sudden stop.

Opening, yeah, maybe a 4? I can pinch it open without using the nail mark.

I just picked up a brand new tribal myself and can confirm they do need a little bit of break-in but should have a decent closing snap to it. The locking release might be a tad firm at first too.

To me, they are just a different breed. Nothing wrong at all with 'em, just different. Great knife - is comfortable to grip, carries well and cuts anything I can throw at it. I have a Buck with a drop point and I carry the Tribal more. I agree with gotgoat, they break in fine.

Interesting! I bought mine used so maybe it was already "broken in", because I can't find anything to complain about as far as opening, closing, or lock-up. I agree on the excellent blade shape, except there is the occasional task that the drop point isn't perfect for, such as delicate piercing work. I've decided that the best solution is to carry a peanut too.
