i just got a case knife in a calm shell package. its a sod buster jr. and when i opened the package the back of the blade was pretty rusty which surprises me since 420hc shouldnt rust that much specially since it was all packaged up.

If it wasn't prepared properly for packaging it's possible that it was sealed up with moisture which caused oxidation.

Seems you have two choices. Either return it or (if minor enough) remove the oxidation.

You shouldn't have to keep it if it isn't satisfactory. Otherwise, this forum will provide much info on fighting rust.

That's just too weird. Even a CV blade shouldn't rust up just sitting in clamshell packaging. Was there signs of water damage?

Does this rust come off easy or is it really eating the steel? I have some stainless kitchen knives that sometimes show some surface rust (stainless isn't really) and it is easily scrapped off with a thumb nail. Deeper rust that pits the surface of the steel is a completely different thing.
