Is Case TruSharp stainless steel cryo treated from the factory? If not, would it benefit from a cryolab treatment?

Also, can I cryo treat knives in a simple freezer? Will it have a noticable effect? How long will I need to freeze at only 31 degrees to get a worthwhile result?

And what about 420HC?

Any replies will be gratefully appreciated by me.

I am not an expert but I'm pretty sure cryo treatment needs to happen right after a metal is quenched/ hardened. And the temperatures need to be a lot lower than the freezing point of water. Sticking your knife in the freezer next to the ice cream isn't going to do anything.

You can google cryotreatment of steel online, and you'll get some ideas of what would need to happen for a steel to benefit from it. From what I understand, you have to quench at minus-hundreds of degrees to get any true benefit from cryo. Your kitchen freezer won't work. I don't know what Case does to their stainless steel, but I have both CV and Tru-Sharp, and the Tru-Sharp doesn't hold up as well.

thx - cpr

Don't know enough to really render an opinion except that I know the process is dependent on temperature, not time. An infinite time at 31°F will have no positive effect on the performance of the steel. You would have to go far sub-zero (-100F to -200F) to make a difference, assuming the process actually works. Opinions of metallurgists seem to vary on that and I have little trust in information from the web sites of companies who perform the treatment. I have no opinion as I have no actual data and am an engineer, not a metallurgist.
