Hi everybody. I don't suppose anybody has used the W.R. Case & Sons version of the USMC (Ka-Bar type) knife? Any impressions? Or maybe even how it compares to a Ka-bar USMC knife? I have looked at several of the Camillus ones in shops and not one but all have shown signs of corrosion and this is in the shop..Thanks, Rod.

The Camillus like the Case are a phosphate finish. Phosphate, parkerizing, isn't very rust resistant. Kabar uses a baked on epoxy finish. Kabar's finish is considerably more rust resistant than either the Camillus or Case.
Basically, whichever one you buy you'll get a 1095 carbon steel blade. They are all basically the same size and shape. There are small differences in grind lines but nothing too different. Kabar has the best warranty though.

Ive never used the case, but historically I know the case version was a prototype that was submmited (during ww2), but rejected due to the thin pommel. (you'll notice the pommel on the case is much thinner than the kabar, the original accepted version). funny thing is now the issue ontarios, and the camillus version (which camillus lost the contracts in 1980 when ontario won it) both have a thin pommel now!

the kabar version is a better made knife, the epoxy coating is more durable than the pakerizing. The camillus version is almost the same as the case, the ontario, the version we were issued when I was in the AF is much the same. I used a kabar, and a ontario for the 8yrs I was in the AF. My time in Desert Storm I used an ontario. All four of these will get most any job done. Like any other knife they all require some maintainence. The kabar will have the best "fit and finish" of all four (and thickest pommel). It will cost you the same as the case, but is a much nicer knife.

hope this helps :)

I have used the case version, it SUCKED!!! The blade kept bending at the guard. I wore it over my right hip (just as I do my kabar)and if you sat on it it would bend, have to be removed from the sheath and bent the other direction to be straightened,(not my kabar though). Also it wouldn't take an edge for anything. The leather handle wasn't traeted with anything so it only made it about three weeks before it started shredding. The sheath was the best thing about it and that ain't saying much:(

Thanks for your input everybody, it's been most helpful. The CASE is out and the Ka-Bar is in! Rod.
