Well.... got the bug and before even receiving my first, I'm picking out my 3rd:D

Pattern - Barlow
Case Tested XX vs S&M File & Wire
Same price

PS
1) GEC Toothpick
2) CS Buffalo Trapper

With the quality of the knives that "neeman" and I recently got from Schatt & Morgan and from what others are starting to say about Queen, I'd say go for the Case.

The S&M file & wire barlow is a big knife- 4 7/8". If you're talking about the standard Case, 3 3/8" barlow, and it's 154CM, I say go for the Case, mostly because of the size. You can't go wrong with a Case.

The file & wire S&Ms are pretty nice, but most are waaaay too big for my taste.

As for the GEC toothpick vs. a CS Buffalo trapper- I'd personally pick the GEC (and I have). The GEC toothpicks are wonderful.

Every knife manufacturer (and many a custom maker) puts out a lemon from time to time. (Trust me, I know...)

If it's something you can't live with, the vendor, maker or the manufacturer will normally make it right.

It's unfortunate but it's a fact of life and I don't think it's going to change anytime soon. Even having a vendor hand pick one for you will occasionally miss an issue with a given knife. (I know this one personally as well...;))

You're exactly right in what you said Blues but lately it seems some knife manufactures are turning out lemons on a regular basis rather than from time to time. Hopefully that will change in time and their quality control will improve.

Knife manufacturers have many hand operations that can contribute to subtle differences as well as different production runs, which means machine setups. Machines can go out of adjustment as well.I don't think I've picked up a knife and not seen a flaw.I'm sure there are many customs that are flawless, I wouldn't know only having owned a few and maybe there's a few production knifes that are flawless, older ones especially.IMO you just have to look past the flaws,(except excessive blade play) and look at them as part of the knives personality.
If I only collected flawless knives, for one, I wouldn't have many, and it would sap all the enjoyment out of it for me.

Ed I agree with what you say also. A bit of quality control wouldn't hurt. Years ago I was a tech on a production line and you had to be on top of the equipment.

Case and Queen are both quality knives, each with their own different manufacturing styles. I say toss a coin.

I agree with this statement more then any I've read. I have many Case knives and 1 S&M. I personally like case better for using. I think the S&M is a little 2 fancy and quit LARGE! I'll do a comparison picture of a large case gunstock and a S&M file and wire large gunstock in the next day or so if you want it.

If the S&M Barlow is that big (4 7/8"), I'd say go for the Case Barlow, especially if it's one with 154CM blade steel. Of course, if you'd rather have a big knife, then scratch that.

On the other 2 knives, is CS Canal Street? If you're asking between a Trapper & GEC's Toothpick, I guess it depends. Personally, I like Trappers better than Toothpicks, so I'd pick the Trapper, but that's me.

Good luck on your choices. At least you're choosing among quality manufacturers.

Yes, the S&M is big-- here's one in hand.
