Case Whaler knife--won't open all the way ?'s

I recently acquired a Case 'Whaler Knife' and it will not open all the way. It actually looks as if the tang of the blade is a wee bit to long. It is in really good condition overall, but I want to get it to open properly. Any advice/experience is appreciated.
