Hey guys,

My father is really interested in this knife and despite my best efforts, I can't find a review or anything helpful as to the quality of the knife.

Does anyone have one that they've used pretty well?

Anyone know what the blade thickness is and if the steel is any good? They say it's "Tru sharp surgical stainless" which sounds like junk to me, but it does also state it's a high carbon stainless...so would it be like 154CM?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you talking about the big bowie that looks like the Marine Raider's knife?

Case's overall quality is usually good, I've got lots of their folders and have no complaints. However, the stainless steel they use is far from ideal, and certainly far from 154CM's performance.

"Tru Sharp" is in all likelyhood some sort of 420 series stainless. It works well for pocket knives, specially since Case slipjoints have thin blades. It doesn't hold an edge for too long but it is very easy to get hair popping sharp. With that being said, I don't think it's a good steel for fixed blades, which I tend to use a bit harder than folders.

In a big bowie like this one, a good carbon steel would be the way to go, IMHO. Something like 5160.

I've got some for looking at but you'd be better off with a Carbon Steel bowie for hard use. Cases "surgical stainless" is something along the lines of 420 not sure exactly what but far from being S30V or 154CM. An Ontario Marine Raider (made on Wednesday) may be your best bet. Also Kabar has a new big bowie out that looks really good and the Ontario RAT knives are close to being a Bowie and look good.

Now if Case would make a Classic style bowie in their CV steel about 1/4" thick, that'd be perfect.
