I will start off by saying that I don't know much at all about slipjoints, or Case knives specifically. It seems like there are so many variants available that I'll never figure out what everything is, or where to start. Is there an idiot's guide or an easy way to sort all the different models or configurations? I think the medium size stockman looks most interesting, what should I be looking for (names, model numbers, what does SS mean?)? Thanks in advance for any info or assistance!

I am an idiot and I offer a guide service, lol.

SS means stainless steel. I agree that a stockman is a great place to start.

That said, Case has an overhelming amount of configurations to choose from. Take your time and review many patterns. The whittlers are great. So are the tiny trappers, and the seahorse whittlers.

I think you see the problem. A lot of great patterns.

What are you looking for in a knife? If you can answer that, we can lead you down he road to financial ruin!!!

On a more helpful note, here is a link to a vendor that organizes by pattern:

It may help you in organizing your thoughts on Case knives.

I've come up with a couple more questions in my looking/reading. What does CV mean? How do you tell the difference in very similar models like Baby Butterbean and Canoe just by looking (the pictures on the first link look identical). Thanks!

CV is chrome vanadium, a carbon steel. (As opposed to stainless.) CV is generally considered to be a better steel for edge holding, but will stain or rust if not looked after more diligently than stainless. Both are fine steels for daily use however.

Take your time and look at the images of the patterns (handle shapes and bolsters) as well as the blade selection and you'll begin picking up the nuances and differences besides the various sizes and styles.

That would be the size if I remember correctly, the Baby Butterbean is 2 3/4" and the Canoe is 3 5/8", and the baby butterbean usually has a long nail pull.

Keep reading up on the topic, and feel free to ask any question.

+1 on the medium stockman :D

A great first one in my opinion is 3318. That's the medium stockman with yellow handels and cv. It is a great little knife.

Id recommend going to some kind of outdoor or sporting goods store that sells case knives, like a bass pro shop, so you can see and feel the knives in person, alot of the patterns are hard to tell apart with only pictures until you handle them in person.

Very good advice...there's nothing like holding one in your hand and seeing how it feels in your pocket. I really like the Sowbelly but, it's to big for what I want to carry. I usually carry a muskrat just 'cause it's the right size for me and it's my favorite pattern. A case Rat is the same size as a 47 (stockman) 3 7/8" closed.
