I've been slowly selling off many of my knives in an effort to get rid of anything I own that I don't carry. In the process I'm picking up a few things that I really do want to carry. Two knives on the radar for me are a Case XX medium Stockman and a peanut in raindrop damascus.

Before I do I'm curious as to whether any of you own knives in that steel and if you do how it performs. Is it good stuff or just for looks?

I have a peanut in rainbow damascus and its probably the sharpest, best ground Case I've ever owned. The main blade has some issues opening and closing though. In spite of that, I'd buy another one if I could find one. Good steel.

I have the canoe and muskrat in raindrop damascus. They are super sharp and easy to sharpen. I don't know about edge retention since I don't use them much, but I love those blades. They truly are functional steels. You can read about the steel on Devin Thomas' website. Good stuff.

I have the peanut and have used it some. It was sharp out of the box with no problems. I've maintained the edge with a leather hone and some chromium oxide compound. I think you'd be very happy carrying and using one.

I have the tiny trapper in raindrop damascus. Edges needed some touchup to meet my standards when I got the knife, but otherwise, no complaints. I believe it's 1084/15N20, which makes for a good, using damascus.

.....The main blade has some issues opening and closing though......

I had the same issues with my damascus peanut, fasteddie. Problem was with closing. Both blades did not close completely without a little extra help.

I started with cleaning up of all the gunk Case seems to leave on their new knives, a soak in mineral oil (more for bone maintenance than the closing problem), worked in some Break-Free with a good number of opening and closing cycles and finished up with a drop of Rem-oil. Seems to have corrected the issues.

I have a large stockman with raindrop damascus. Mine gets pretty sharp and holds an edge for a decent amount of time. It didn't come very sharp but after taking care of that, I'm very happy with it and would buy another.
