I'm interested in restoring an old Case XX #3318HE. Could someone advise me of knife restoration etiquette, and are there companies or persons that sell old knife parts.

hy lockback,

I don't have a lot of experiance with restauration, but I'd suggest reading the book: pocketknife repair (don't know the autor by heart).

As for restauring: i would try to preserve the 'overall looks' of the knife. Don't try to clean it up too much: it is and needs to stay an old knife with a story to tell (not a reground catastrophy).

Depending on what needs worked on it may be a fairly easy job. About the same as putting together a folding knife kit. Pins, and handle material can be replaced easily with very close matches in most cases. You can buy nickel silver or brass and make new bolsters also, but thats a little more difficult and its hard to match alloys sometimes. The same goes for liners only thats another tough job, if you don't have much experience and requires more tools.
If anything crucial such as blades or springs are damaged your pretty much SOL.
The book mentioned above would probably help alot. I haven't read it myself but I've seen good reports on it here at BFC.
Take a look through some supply companies web sites and see if you can find what you thnk you'll need.

Hope that helps
