What is special about Case XX Select?

Apparently this is the current offerings: http://www.wrcase.com/special_programs/case_xx_select/current_products/

At first I just thought it was the bolsters have the indention but when I went to a dealer I found their picture doesn't show that indention, so what is it?

They are just the regular Case line with extra polishing and more attention to fit and finish. They have a special stamp as well as unique cover materials to set them apart.

I have that Texas Jack posted by OP. I really can't tell a difference in fit and finish from other TJs I have from later years. Some recently acquired Texas Jacks from the 1970s are better in that regard.

The knife pictured above^ isn't Case XX Select. If it's what a particular dealer is picturing for the line, it's likely in error. The knife above has the standard line tang stamp, and un-fluted bolsters. In other words, it's a standard-line Case product.

See the equivalent below, which is the same knife with the 'Case XX Select' embellishments (fluted bolster, special tang stamp), as shown from Case's own page on the Case XX Select line:

Thanks. So all Case XX Selects have fluted bolsters?

It's one embellishment among many that might be included on Case XX Select knives. Either fluting, or engraving, or maybe 'pinched' bolsters. You ordinarily won't see them on the standard-line product, however. Look first for the 'CASE SELECT' tang stamp, then for the other frills (shaped/worked bolsters, unique shields, swedging, long pulls instead of nail nicks, etc.) to distinguish the Select line from the standard line.

Some years have had smooth bolsters. Some have had the fluted bolsters. Some have had bolsters with words stamped into them - for example, the 2011 Moss Green Select series had "-XX-" above the word "Select" on the end-cap bolster.

It varies from year to year. You just have to look at the individual knives.

Here is a link to their production list for the Select XX series. http://www.wrcase.com/special_programs/checklists/Case XX Select.pdf

It has not been updated since 2013. I don't know if they are still making knives for the Select XX program or not.

Either design can be beautiful and desirable just really depends on the knife to me.
