Hello All:

First of all, I have to ask, why is there no forum on hear specifically for Case knives under manufactures? Oh well.

Anyways, I have been looking for a new knife that I can carry around at work. Do to working in an office where I am required to wear business casual, I have decided to get the Case toothpick. I think this little knife will be great because I need it to disappear into my pocket and not be seen. Also, I have been in the market for a "gentleman's folder" that is built strong but screams "Classy!". I have been moving back to traditional slip joint pocket knives. I own a kershaw skyline and a spyderco delica 4 as well as a case medium stockman.....i find myself most of the time reaching for that old case knife. I blame it on my dad for always saying that cases are the best knives. Anyways the question I have is about blade material. To be honest, this knife will get used the most as it will be on my person no less than 9 hours a day 5 days a week. I think most people say that cases are the best because of the Chrome Vanadium that is used. However, this is a very small blade and was wondering if the stainless steel may be better. Would someone please point me in the right direction here? I like the stainless steel because of the rust resistance, strength, but MOSTLY because of the color of the grips that is available, I would like this knife with a black grip. However, If CV is much better than I will just get the yellow old fashion grip and go with the "traditional" look. I know that the CV sharpens up better but is it a softer metal? With this knife being so small and thin I want to make sure I get the right blade. Thanks all!

Any knife manufacturer can have a forum at BF. It's free. They just have to ask the site owner for one and they have to staff it with a moderator. Case has chosen to have their own forum elsewhere.

I find Case stainless works just fine in an office environment. It even works fine elsewhere.

Edited to change "company" to "knife manufacturer"

You might find the CV to sharpen up more easily, though either CV or 'Tru-Sharp' will take very fine edges. I say CV sharpens more easily, just because it's a little less prone to burrs as seen on the stainless, and somewhat less wear-resistant than the stainless (meaning it grinds easier & faster). It's very user-friendly in that regard, and can be sharpened on virtually any media from Arkansas stones to diamond hones, with very little fuss.

All that said, the stainless is still quite easy to deal with as well. Either steel can be sharpened using identical tools & methods, with equally nice results. I have some patterns in both SS and CV versions, and I sharpen both by identical means, to similar edge geometry (25°-30° inclusive, sometimes thinner). In terms of edge performance and cutting, they're virtually indestinguishable from one another, after sharpening them up.

Speaking from my personal experience, I find Case's CV carbon steel and Tru-Sharp stainless steel to be pretty much equal overall. CV is a little easier to touch up the edge on. Stainless is easier to maintain otherwise. I own and carry both types.

Recently my daily carry combo has been a Chestnut Bone CV Sod Buster Jr and a Bermuda Green Bone SS Peanut, so I mix and match as the mood suits me.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it either way, but there are certainly those who have very distinct preferences.

I've got one Case Toothpick but I have never carried it. I usually go for something a little bigger. Toothpick would make a fine light-duty knife for general office and daily chores. I'd leave something more sturdy in the car though if that was all I was going to carry.

Thanks guys, great advice. I plan on also getting the Case Muskrat latter on down the road so this was advice I was needing. This will be a light duty knife. I will probably keep my Kershaw Skyline in the car for when I need something bigger and will use my future Muskrat for when im heading out on the weekends, in the woods, or on the gun range. I just want something small and good looking for edc in the office.
