Case Yellow CV Sodbuster, or stick with GEC Green Canvas Micarta Bullnose?

I have never started a thread here in traditional, so I hope this is not too trivial a question.

I ordered and received a canvas micarta Bullnose. It is a great knife, with (to my eye) perfect construction. I love the green Canvas micarta, and I am excited to try o-1.

However, there are two things that have kept me from carrying or using it yet. First, the tip is very close (basically flush) to the edge and I'm afraid with my less than superb sharpening skill it will become proud relatively soon. Second, it seems to be in a middle ground between a medium knife and a large knife. I have no sodbuster or other large pattern knives, and already have a charlow as a medium size knife. I am wondering if I should get a Case yellow CV Sodbuster and let go of the Bullnose.

I know many would say "why not both?" But I think I would prefer to have one knife I really like per use/size and would like someone who will put it to good use to have the Bullnose.

I ask here because I have never had a cv Case or even seen Case yellow in person, let alone have a sodbuster, and I know many of you have a great amount of experience with cv, Case yellow, and full size sodbusters.

So, keep the Bullnose or go for the Sodbuster?

(Also, I was under the impression the full size yellow cv was discontinued, but they are in stock on one site, so I guess I was wrong.)

Thanks for any help!

Woodrow gifted me a Sodbuster Junior a while back, and I think it's an absolutely great knife. A shame to hear about the problem with the Bullnose.

Yeah, I would absolutely love it I'd it were half an inch longer. How do you like the cv?

Well, I just decided to stick with the Bullnose. Got it sharpened up and good to go!

Take a few thousandths off the kick or a bit off the spine if your tip sits proud in the future. Anywho, Case soddie is a nice knife, but the Bullnose in micarta is a GREAT knife.

Like the poster above me said, you can carefully take a very little off the kick to lower the tip. I've ended up doing that to knives from many companies on occasion, even on Case Sodbusters. And, while there's certainly nothing wrong with a Case Sodbuster, these new micarta GECs are really something else. Plus, Case Sodbusters are only about $25, so you can get one without too much trouble, I would imagine. And yes, you can get fullsize CV Sodbusters again. Case started making them again in 2013.

I really like the GEC Bullnoses. They are great knives and generally fit and finished a little better than the Sodbuster Jrs. It's also double the price.

The Sodbuster Jr seems to be a little better at slicing (thinner blade?). Also, the Yeller Case just has some Mojo that the GEC just doesn't have.

When I thinned out my collection, I tried to keep the knives that were special and really spoke to me. I kept the Jr.

I've got a couple of both and like both for different reasons. The overall quality on the GEC's is better, and it's really not close - but then, neither are the prices. The Case Sodbuster Jr. carries easier in my opinion, and slices like a dream.

Sorry to hear about the proud blade on your GEC. Mine has no problems, and if forced to choose between the two, I'd pick the Bull Nose. Best of luck!

I have both a Bullnose and a Sodbuster Jr.
If I had a problem with a proud blade on the Bullnose, I would try the modification the fellas have suggested. I much prefer the Bullnose to the Sodbuster.

Thanks for all the information and help everyone! The blade is not proud yet, I just worried for later. I have seen other people's successful mods of these kind, I'm just always thinking I'd botch it.
