As Im pretty new to Slippies, Im not very knowledgable about certain things, like cases steel.

How does it hold up for whittling? What "common" steel does it compare too?

Thanks!

CV is great for whittling, my son and I use it all the time. It compares to 1085 or 1095.

The latest analysis I've seen on Case CV, had carbon at .86.

Also the Case CV is my favorite steel of all the production knives being made today.
It actually holds an edge longer than the older Case knives I have. It is good stuff!

Where'd you see that? Considering CV is generally considered to be 01706c/50100B, that puts it in the 1095 range.

That's where. :D

I have never considered CV to be the same as Camillus 0170-6C (Also called Cold Steel Carbon V).

Camillus 0170-6C holds an edge better than CV.

But I do like CV.

yup. Ill probably hit up lowes and get me a cheap case knife. I really like ther F&F, and d2 is difficult to sharpen on the go.

maybe its just my imagination (or nostalgia), but it seems to me the old case carbon steel performs a little bit better than the newer "CV".

is CV a new/different steel or is it just a new name for the same steel they always used?

anyone know when they started calling their carbon steel "CV"?

I don't know what it is, but I'm sure glade I gave it another shot!! I've known how to sharpen a knife a while, but it has just been in the last 4 or 5 years I've started evening edges up. I think this must have been what I let fool me before about Case's CV steel(I was the problem not the steel)! I can get my new canoe sharper then most of my 1095 knives and this knife is actually a little older then my previous Case Stockman knives three of which were CV. My canoe does however have the best snap I have experienced on a Case!

I have done a lot of carving with both Case SS and CV. The CV awsome for carving and whittling. But, if that is all your doing with the knife the SS will work also. However, it will dull faster, and if you put a real thin edge on the blade it will roll easer too. So it's CV all day.... FOR ME!

Hi,

Yeah I put a slightly wider edge on my Tru-Sharp than my CV. I'm around 30deg for CV and around 35-40 for my Tru-Sharp. Gives me a good strong working edge for my uses. While I prefer CV, I have no problems with my Tru-Sharp models.
