I'm wondering if anyone knows what kind of steel Case used for their knives between 1965 and 80. I recently acquired a Casexx 5361 and am curious as to the steel used in that period.

According to Steve Pfeiffer (his book Collecting Case Knives), the 61 pattern was only offered in CV Chrome Vanadium steel. Most Case knives in the 60's and early 70's were CV steel.

If its a 5361, I assume that you mean a fixed blade hunting knife? Yes that pattern would have been chrome vanadium (carbon steel). Prior to 1965, Case made very few knife patterns (pocket or fixed) in stainless steel, and 99% of the time a stainless Case knife from that era would have the word STAINLESS in the tang stamp.

The Case hunting knives of that era were made with carbon steel blades that were chrome plated. Case carbon steel pocket knife blades were never chrome plated, but the hunting knives and many of the kitchen knives had chrome plate carbon steel blades.
