Im sharpening a CaseXX for a co-worker and im wondering what kind of steel this thing has? It's pretty tough to profile but im getting it. It's an old rusty hundred year old Case knife that looks like it may have been sharpened once or twice. I've looked everywhere trying to find out what kind of steel this blade has without any luck. Any ideas?

I don't know the exact composition of the steel but it's definitely carbon steel which I'm sure you already know. Case currently uses Chrome Vanadium steel in their carbon steel knives. It's something similar to that but the properties were probably a little different 100 years ago.

I can relate to your situation. I have a Case knife from the 1920-1940 era that I carry on a regular basis. Some say that Case's steel from that time was not hardened to the level that it is today. I'm not disputing that but the steel on this knife is definitely harder to sharpen than modern day Case carbon steels in my experience. It's not a PITA to sharpen or anything like that but I can feel the difference when sharpening.

All I can really tell you is that it's carbon steel and it will hold its edge pretty well once you get it sharp.

It definitely is a girl dog to sharpen! I finally got it to shave but I've been grinding hard on the extra coarse side of my Carborundum stone trying to profile the blade and it was giving my stone hell! Grooved my stone something awful so I had to keep switching sides to try to keep it level. Then I used my DMT Diamond stone "RED" for another half hour but she finally shaves. This thing is worst than S30V if you ask me!

I guess the good thing is that you probably won't have to sharpen it again for awhile. I'm sure your co-worker will appreciate your efforts.
