Just got back from Wal-Mart where I picked up another G-Shock and this time in the solar version with atomic time setting. I picked up a model 2608 primarily due to the extra large numbers! Sure does make it easier on the eyes! I've had several Casio G-Shocks and every one of them has been a great watch that kept excellent time....for what I need time to be kept. This is the first solar, and the first dark blue G-Shock I've though so I wanted to see what ya'll thought of the solar models. If I've read that tiny writing correctly it looks like a full charge is good for 6 months? Also wanted to ask about the power save mode.....is there any reason you wouldn't want to keep it in this setting?

Again I really like the face dial on this one as there are no little dials within the dial......just BIG 'OLE numbers. :D :D :D

Going to retire G-Shock 2738, along with G-Shock 2548, and a real ole' timer, G-Shock 1548.

You know though, these watches are all still in good shape and can be worn for several more years so I may end up putting them on the For Sale forum to move 'em out! Guess there is a market for used watches out there......................somewhere!!

I wear this very same watch, also known as a GW-300. Wonderful timepiece. You'll marvel over the accuracy if you listen to AM talk radio with top-of-the-hour newsbreaks. This thing beeps EXACTLY when CBS starts the "music" for the news. Totally kewl.

I don't see any reason to shut the power save function off. Kinda freaky when you wake up and try to check the time though. The screen is blank until you tilt the watch "forward" enough to trip the internal switch. Nice function.

One word of caution however. The crystal is some sort of plastic. It doesn't stand up very well to welding slag burns. Take it off if you plan to do any welding. Cheers.

I wear this same watch daily as well. When I recieved it as a gift the charge was at medium and I wore for about five months mainly indoors without the charge going into the low.

It will charge some off of plain flourescent lights, enough for the watch to remain in "medium" with daily tasks and a couple indiglow light checks a day. The main thing that eats power on the watch is that indiglow light feature, so if you don't have to use it, don't use it. But if you have to use it it won't really affect your charge much unless you use it a lot.

Like I said, wore it for five months and it remained at medium. When spring came around I was spending more time outdoors and the charged jumped up to "high". If you are out in the sun for like ten minutes the watch will fully charge itself. My watch is at "high" right now.

The point is that this watch will keep its charge for a long, long, long time under average use of the indiglow even if you don't spend a lot of time outside.

Another thing, the power saver feature is nice, if it is dark the watch will shut off the display and the touch of a button will bring it back. I turned off the indiglow light feature that allowed you to turn your wrist and light up the screen. I found it hard to do and just a waste of power.

The only problem I've had with the watch is adjusting to day light savings time. It wouldn't do it and kept getting signal errors. I just changed it manually and all was well.

Hope this helps. take care.

I've got the retro looking 5600 with the square face but it is solar powered. Mine hasn't shown anything but 'high' since I got it, but I am outdoors at least an hour or two most days. I use the alarm daily and the light a couple of times per night.

My dad has a non G-Shock Solar Atomic. Won't pick up a singal like his LaCrosse one did, but the batteries wont go dead after 2 months either

I have a couple Casio Solar watches, including a GW-300 Atomic Solar, and a HUGE Protrek Tough Solar Pathfinder. These watches are amazing!

You can't beat the G-Shock Atomic Solars with a stick. I have had a GW-300 for about a year, and it has been nothing but a pleasure to wear and use. Just beware ofthe EL-Backlight feature. It'll discharge the battery very quickly if you wear your G during the evening hours. I have the EL-Backlight turned off on all three of my solar powered G-Shocks.

The GW-300 isn't my favorite watch, but it probably is the most reliable, no-nonsense, functional and perfect timekeeper in my arsenal.

I have the 5700 which is the round version of the 5600, and I absolutely love mine. It is a tough solar model, has the 100 hour countdown counter and dual time feature--which both can be used while viewing the time, and features larger and more crisp numbers/letters than the regular G-Shocks (but still a bit smaller than those found on the GW-300).

I purchased the GW-3000 and had it for a while, but I could never get the time to synchronize. I also thought the band was a bit too rigid, the whole watch was a bit heavy, and I decided I didn't really like the style of the watch with the chrome highlights either. To each his own though; I can certainly see why many like the GW-300. It is a great watch, but for those considering other choices, I would throw out the 5600/5700 as great alternatives.

Thanks for the replies. Yep, this is the GW300. I also turned off the backlight as I don't really care for it either, but I REALLY dig those big numbers.

How long have you had yours? Many, including me, have had theirs go weird...the light and chime stop working b/c of some internal problem....
where did you get yours? Mine came from Higuchi..

Hi Geoff,

I got mine 6-months ago in a shop in Perth (West Australia) It's a small watch shop that specialises in Casio. I've had no problems at all with mine so far and have worn it almost 24/7 since I got it.

Brother, I hope that continues to be the case...I loved mine but am skittish about replacing it.

I've had my g-5600 for quite awhile. I wear it almost daily. Mine also came from Higuchi. I have had no problems with mine. It is almost always at a full charge. I have heard of others having problems with them. I love mine though.

Must have been some lemons in the batch. I have to say that I have never had even the slightest problem with any G-Shock I have owned. I went through a phase of buying myself a new one on every overseas trip (before I had a morgage and some sense) so I've got 7. The original one (can't think of the model number - it's the same as the 5600 in looks, just no solar) is still running after 9 years. I have a large brown one (9500) with a dead battery, the others are all still going.

I should get the rest on E-Bay because I only wear the 5600 or my Omega SMP nowadays. Ahhh excess, I love it.
