Hi all. First post in this forum but wanted to share a link to a tomahawk that I designed and had John of JK Knives make for me. The goal was to create a tactical hawk that encompassed elements of many designs that I like. As you can see, the winkler style rnd hawk handles played heavily into the handle design. I would like to give him credit for the inspiration behind the handle contour. The other aspects of the hawk I drew, then re-drew, then erased and drew again. I came up with a design that I was really proud of and John helped me bring it to life. I hope you all like it as much as I do! Thanks all for looking!

You did a good job on the design. Would be nice to see a review when you get your hands on it. I'm curious as to how the sheath looks as well. Hopefully it will afford rapid deployment.

Good looking 'hawk. And you got gnarly hands, dude. Workin' man hands.

Thanks for the compliments guys! John doesn't do much bending so he's supplying a leather sheath with it. I may go aftermarket kydex for it but I haven't decided yet.

Also, as much as I'd love to take credit for those beautifully manicured hands, I can't. They're john's... The hands of an artist!

reminds me more than a little of a Winkler hawk....like the way this looks.

This was a fun one to make, I enjoyed it. As for the hands, my main income is as a hand model.

I like it, it would be a great option for those not willing or able to pay for a Winkler. It's a nice interpretation, and I really like the exposed pommel. John came out with a sort of similar tactical spike hawk just after I placed an order for my Winkler RnD, now this! There's always something else getting added to the wish list.
The weight and balance of your new hawk is something I'm curious about. Part of the Winker design is the thicker, yet tapered tang. This helps it's momentum, yet a lighter hawk is faster. Both have their place is the world.
Seems like you have an awesome tool/weapon there. Nice job on picking the right maker as well.

Weight is 2 lbs. 1 oz, and it balances about 2 1/2" to 3" behind the head. I should have taking a pic of the 2x4 I chopped with it, chops very well, and really digs in.

Thanks foxx. You're right, I could not have found a better maker. John did an outstanding job on this, and made it exactly to my specs. Not only that, but he has good prices, good communication, and churned this out a month before schedule. The tang is also skeletonized like crazy to keep weight where it should be. If anyone is in the market for an amazing hawk along with an equally amazing maker (with funds being a bit tighter) I would give John a ring!

John, this one is probably going to my father at some point. If he gets greedy with it I may be back to you for one in a nice exotic wooden handle!!!!

swimmerdude, click on the link in pmbspyders original post above. John (JK Knives) posted what he's selling them for. You should shoot him an email, he's a good guy.

13" of .25 thick steel, plus about 10" of .25 thick micarta on each side. Tang is skeletonized too. I think the weight and balance is perfect, but I agree, from pictures alone you wouldn't think it!

13" of .25 thick steel, plus about 10" of .375 thick micarta on each side. Tang is skeletonized too. I think the weight and balance is perfect, but I agree, from pictures alone you wouldn't think it!

Fixed it for you.

Posted this in JK forum, thought I'd add pics to this thread as well in case none of you guys get over there...

Well, I've had a few weeks with my baby, and let me tell you that this thing is unreal! Not only does it look incredible, but it's real world function (aside from hacking people up) is outstanding! I've run it through its paces and chopped wood, hammered concrete (with the spike), shattered glass, and run it through some sheat metal. It keeps asking for more! Coming in at 33oz it absolutely pulverizes anything it touches! Because of the weight I wouldn't recommend this as a tool to carry with you if you're trying to keep weight down, but if physical defense and absolute destructive power are something that interest you this is most definitely the ticket (disclaimer: I AM NOT a tomahawk fighting guru, I just have seen first hand what this thing can do to meat - chopped a 7lb chicken in two with a half hearted swing). If any of you are looking for something along the lines of what I described, I would most certainly take a look at this hawk.

*Added- if breaching and destruction is your main priority, I would ask John to leave the back spike a little thicker when he grinds it. I see no deformation in mine, but if you're out there everyday hammering concrete I'd imagine you'd want the point a little stouter! Now for the pic spamming (sorry, no "in-use" pics at the moment - my fiancee looked at me like I was crazy when I asked her to take pics of me using this beast!)!
