cast blades?

Just saw Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers again the other day, and I noticed something that bugged me in the first movie as well. When the Orcish smiths are making weapons and armor for Saruman's hordes, they pour molten steel into a large tabletop mold, and it runs into channels shaped like Orcish sword blades. Then they show them hammering one of these blades on the anvil.

Wouldn't a cast blade be very brittle and fragile? Or would the forging process afterward align the metal more and make it tougher?

Metal has to be smelted from ore anyway... it's not like they come out of the ground in long strips to be hammered into shape...

Hey! Wake up! Hello?! fantasy movie here!Tell me your not serious, by relying on this fantasy movie production for technical information about things in your real world. It's a movie, regard what you see in it as merely entertainment. The makers of this movie were only trying to show what they thought were interesting images for dramatic effect, not show a tutorial on blade productiion.

Did you know that if you start with five layers of steel you only have to fold it eighteen times to get over one million layers:confused:

and this relates to this topic how:confused:

If you take 2.3%carbon,14.0%chromium,9.0%vanadium and 1.0%molybdenum and melt it all together and atomize it into fine droplets and let it cool rapidly to form a fine powder(the crossection of witch particals would be bigger than one of those million layers)then subject it to high heat and pressure what would you have? This can then be forged into bars. Why am I the only one not alowed to drift?

You would have S90V.

JD pretty well nails this one on the head. It is a movie. Don't worry about how accurate something like the making of the blades is. They are just trying to give you an idea of what is going on, not show you how to make a sword.

I have no problem with their blade-casting process, because I know they use magic to cast out the brittleness-and-fragility imps.

Are you guys telling me that isn't how swords and knives are made? I guess I shouldn't have spent the last two weeks making a mold and pouring steel!  :p
