Just saw Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers again the other day, and I noticed something that bugged me in the first movie as well. When the Orcish smiths are making weapons and armor for Saruman's hordes, they pour molten steel into a large tabletop mold, and it runs into channels shaped like Orcish sword blades. Then they show them hammering one of these blades on the anvil.
Wouldn't a cast blade be very brittle and fragile? Or would the forging process afterward align the metal more and make it tougher?
