Nice find, and post, although the prices I get quoted are a bit higher?

Looking at the Dutch Ovens, something I would love to have, but not necessarily carry very far, what would be nice is the top that will hold the coals with a bottom with no feet. That way you could use it on a stove, over, charcoal grill, etc. and just find three non-river stones, or such, to prop it on when you are actually lucky enough to have it over a fire and have the great top to hold coals. I did not see such a choice. Does it come that way?

Sure the feet are better in a fire, but unless car camping, I don't usually have a horse handy to pack it in....so I like to consider maximum usability. I'm getting hungry! :D

Hmm.. It looks as though amazon changed some of their prices already.

As for the dutch oven, I ordered one with legs (Camp oven). I want to see how I could use it in my oven as well. Maybe the legs will fit through the grates on the oven. If you wanted to use it stovetop, I suppose you would have to remove the legs. I'm not sure how you would do that either.

I'm sort of a cast iron newbie... I've read great things about it and I'm just waiting for my stuff to come in.

Lodge is considered top of the line for cast iron.At this point in time about everything else is made in china ! ..The dutch oven is a very good do everything pot ,soups ,stews ,biscuits and other bread, pie. Have fun !!

If you are buying sight unseen, buy Lodge brand. It is good heavyweight cookware with a proper finish. Cheap Chinese stuff tends to be thin and uneven with poor casting. I'm sure there are good Chinese cast iron cookware makers, I just haven't seen them yet ;)

Camp Chef makes some good stuff too. I have a couple of their Dutch Ovens purchased off Ebay for a good price that are worth the money (at least what I paid :)).

Donald,

What you want is usually called a "bean pot". Sometimes has the rimmed lid for coals, sometimes not. They sell lid stands that work jsut fine for holding these ovens off the coals for just a few bucks.

If the pot comes without the rimmed lid, you can fake it with a ring of wadded up foil around the edge of the lid.

The legged ovens do work fine on a gas kitchen stove as the legs can dangle down between the grid. And they're fine in the kitchen oven. Either set the legs down between the gaps in the rack or set the D.O. on a cookie sheet and slide the whole set up in the oven.

Phil

I dont know what kind of finish you guys require for cast iron...

But a grinder bit will zip through the cast with no problem... (dremel will work)

Could even file em off if you have the time :D

(I've beat up my fair share of exhaust manifolds...)
