Please cast your vote and help me choose between the BM 705 or 940 and tell me the reasons for your choice.

I want to use it as my everyday carry for all around use. I know I could buy both but can only afford one right now

Thanks

Go for the 940. I have a 710 and I just got my 940 yesterday. The 940 has an aluminum handle rather than the G10, the blade profile is better and I generally likee the 940 more. Hope this helps.

If I didn't own any AXIS knives, I'd start with a 710 first. I think the blade geometry, size, and handle shape make it the most versatile of the Axis line; IMO.

I'd go with the 705 if you already have a few 3.5 to 4 inch blades, but no smaller knives.

I'd go with the 940 Osborne if you want a knife that looks good as well as functions well. Also, do you prefer aluminum handles over G-10?. The Osborne is definitely the pretty one in the Axis family.

To cut through the bull. If it was me, I'd go for the Osborne. Then again, I already own a 710, and have small knives.

A 940 is next on my list but the 705 is my daily carry. It's a small but in a big way!
It's small enough to be sheeple friendly and not raise eyebrows at airports. It almost 'disappears' in the pocket yet, it's built like a tank. If you need something small but tough then the 705 is the way to go. If you want/need the larger blade then the 940 would be a great choice.
I hope this helps.

Very different knives. I prefer the long, slim blade and thin handle of the 940, a lot of knife is a sleek package. The 705 is a bit thick, too bulky to be a Gents folder but a solid work knife for a blade of it’s size.

Thanks for all your great comments so far, please keep them coming...

But when I asked you to cast your vote, I should have said, "cast your vote for the BM 705 or 940, ASSUMING YOU COULD ONLY OWN AND CARRY ONE KNIFE!"

Don't get excited, it's just a theoretical question

It so happens that carrying both together is a joy I have allowed myself since the beginning of October when I got a blue 940 to accompany my 705 in daily carry.

If I could only have one and no other, I would go to the store and look at every 705 and 940 in there and buy the one that was put together the best with the best matched lines and smoothest action.

The 705 is probably the one that will raise fewer hackles in non-knife people. It's probably more Airport tolerated and in closer compliance in areas limited to 3 inch folders. It's also quieter to operate than the 940. I guess it's more politically correct.

I have found the blade quality on the 940 to be the best of any Benchmade knife I own.

I own a 705 and have a 940 coming on Monday, but have handled a friends a bit.

The 705 is a great knife, but for my hands it is only a 3 finger grip knife. Plus like Stjames said it is a bit thick for a small knife. I gave it to my wife and she absolutely loves it. (Not that I'm implicating it is a womans knife).

The 940 has a very slim, contoured handle, and has a more substantial blade for the size of the handle. I'll be able to say more once I get it and carry it for a few days.

Very different knives IMO, G10 vs. Aluminum, bladed shape quite different,
You'll find people who love them both.
Let us know what you get, either one should make a great carry knife.

Okay, you can only have one knife and it's between the 705, and 940 huh?...

I vote for the 710!

All right, okay that wasn't fair. Ahhhh, ummmmm...940.

Yeah, 940 for it's bigger blade.

The 940 feels best in my hand and I was a big 710 fan.

The 705 is just too thick.

But I carry a small Sebenza.

I like my 940sbt so much I plan on buying another one soon. Maybe a blue if I can still get one.
I have cut more with my 940sbt than I care to think. Within the last month I have cut THOUSANDS of feet of cardboard. It has cleaned and fillet over twenty fish including cutting through the spine of many. (for bait) harvesting vegetables, And tons of other uses.
When I use this knife I love the way it feels in my hand. It is very light and precise, It slices like crazy, and it is attractive to the eye, Mine anyway. When I first got it in the mail I thought it was too small. After using it a lot I dont think so anymore. So yeah I'll vote for the 940. (twice)

I had the opportunity to get the Osborne at a knife show, but bought the 705 instead. I just don't care for the aluminum handle of the 940.

Well so far the voting looks like this:

9 votes for the 940

1 vote for the 750

3 non votes giving reasons why both are good choices

The 940 has a substantial lead so far...

The booths are still open so cast your vote and make a difference in the final tally

I would have to vote for the 705, first because I don't like the metal handles.
Second I think the 705 blade would be much easier to resharpen. If that is not a problem for you then you may look at the 940.
Third the blade style on the 705 seems to lend itself to finer slicing for food prep. and the like. How ever the blade looks thicker on the 940 and would last longer if you are stabing things. What it all boils down to is what you want the knife for,all around use or just incase the wrong things happen one day. Let us know happy buying.

I think I am leaning towards the BM 940 after reading everyones post so far. I just need a little push off the fence now so vote, vote, vote......

Hi wkrafft,

Did you get your BM 940 on Monday like you were expecting to? If you did what do you think after carrying it for a few days?

Please let me know what you think. None of the dealers by me have one that I can handle or look at and I am still trying to make up my mind between the 940 and the 705 which I have been able to handle.

Thanks,
starchaser

I have both. The 705 is the one I carry but you really can't go wrong with either. The only possible draw back to the 940 is the handle will scratch.
