Finally rented "Castaway" last week. Pretty good, I suppose. I don't know if I would have done a better or worse job than he did, but I would have done a few things differently:

- had a knife (duh!)
- taken the clothes off the pilot's corpse
- used a bow to start the fire insted of hand turning

Anything you can think of ?

Sure, lots of things.
Made real rope rather than braiding.
Been making rope the whole time.
Fishing via nets or chasing the fish into a trap
Made the cave a more liveable area
Expanded the in-cave cistern to hold more fresh water
Construct a tougher, faster vessel to escape island, especially one with a larger stock of fresh water.

I do believe the pacific islanders made sails out of something. Given time, don't you think he could have constructed one?

And the biggest things I would have done differently:
1) Never work for FedEx
2) Never date Helen Hunt

Those are words to live by. Never date a woman with a larger forehead than your own. hehehehehehe

The Pacific islanders use to use coconuts as a source of fibers for ropes and cloth. The inside of the husk is layered with threads. If I were stuck on an island for four years I would have figured out how to make something with this stuff. I also would have finish construction on my golf course. :)

I don't know about you, but I think this movie was too subliminal..All I saw was FEDEX throughout the entire film..I can't even look at another FEDEX box again...Arrgghh..

-Kept the dead pilot's life vest, could carry water with that better than with coconuts
-removed his SAK fom his keyring, before giving it to Helen Hunt.
-after I returned to "the world", iwould write a letter to the liferaft company to complain about the lack of a knife and survival gear.

The Life Raft did have gear attached to it. The gear was attached to the raft by a rope that got stuck on the plane as the raft inflated. Not that it matters.....:D
