Catbite/rabies shots:One of THOSE days....

I spent Thrusday in a friend's shop learning all kinds of new stuff I couldn't wait to try out today. At 1:30am this morning I was bounced out of bed by a full fledged feline WAR going on about 4 feet from the base of my bed (we have a cat door in the window).
Merry, my trusty shopcat was defending hearth and home against intruders unknown on the buffet under the window and it sounded like World War III. My body is generally much smarter than I am. Unfortunately, this time, my body decided Merry needed help and I lunged into the fray long before my brain came on line.
My right hand (aka my HAMMER HAND) now sports numerous slashes and a few rather impressive holes. It was pitch black, so I have no idea which one nailed me. Merry's had all his shots, but I never even got a look at the other one, and with numerous cases of rabies in the county this year you can guess where I spend the majority of my day......
The walk in clinic we waited at for two hours had a very sympathetic doctor, but no rabies vaccine, so it was off to the emergency room for another hour long wait :jerkit: and not one, not two,....but 6 shots (with five more on the way...). I managed to preserve my right shoulder and am hoping to forge tomorrow, (if I can hold the hammer), but sitting in this chair is really starting to hurt....... :o
Next time I'm going to leave the home defense thing up to Merry......

Feel lucky it's not some years ago. They used to give those shots in the stomach/sternum. One or two a day for about 1-2 weeks. It got progressively worse with each shot.

When I was in the service, a friend and I were charged with "escorting" another trooper that had to get these shots, and after a couple of days, he was promising us all the money he'd ever make if we'd just let him go AWOL(like how would he pay us all this loot them?;)) .

It was so bad for him, that it finally came to blows(his choice) and I told the CO we couldn't be responsible for his safety anymore. They locked him in the detention ward of the base hospital(which they should have done to begin with) while he finished treatments.

Sorry to hear of your ill fortune. Hope you feel better soon.

I hope your cat is OK too.

Hope your butt feels better soon. :D
Look at it this way - at least you don't have your OWN cats getting into it at 1:30 AM ON the bed...

When that happens and you get dragged from a deep sleep with that unearthly wailing isen't your first foggy thought that you died and went to hell?.....

Hope you recover quickly Happycat, maybe your next one should be a Lynx:D

Mike, I really DO feel lucky. Considering rabies is always fatal, and may take a few months to show (and they can't do anything for you after the first two weeks...)......Give me the freaken shots! Weather I was exposed or not, I'd be worrying about it for the next six months wondering weather I had it or not.

Miden: Merry already brings enough game (live and dead) into the house to feed a family of four......I can only imagine the mess if he was any bigger:eek:

Thanks for the support guys. Gonna go try and bang on some steel now (or at least grind something)

Yes, don't you just love it when they wake you at 3 in the morning to show their hunting abilties and drop the "kill" at your feet on the bed.
Even worse is when the rodent is still alive and gets dropped and then you have to join in the hunt!!:D :D

Ed , Next time use a bucket of water or a squirt gun,its a lot safer.:) :)

Merry tends to specialize in chipmonks. We've got the mouse thing pretty well down pat as far as recapture and release, but those chippies are FAST...

Chippies are snappy, that is for sure. I thought squirrels were too but last week I found a dead one under my work bench, and he was not small.
I often saw my one cat, Angus going after them and often wondered what the outcome would be if he caught up with one, I guess I know now!:D
I always figured though that the squirrel could give a good account of himself.
Angus did not have a mark on him though, maybe he ambushed the guy. It must have been a very quick hit though, the fluffy tailed rats eyes were still open.
Anyway, Hope you recover quickly from your wounds.

Mike

I feel for you Ed, my son had to get the shots a couple of years a ago. He recovered, I'm still reeling from the $2200 bill from the hospital. A bucket of water diffuses lots of situations:)

Yes too, I thought it was still a lot more shots than that. I have no cat door that intruders can venture through but Trixie Ann, the mother of three of our cats we still keep (and they are sweet as sugar), is about the meanest bitch on Earth. She has nailed me so many times for very little to no reason I have gotten used to it, almost. It is good you only have eleven shots to take. I believe it was about twice that much before now (I didn't even know that. I thought it was still 21 or so in the gut.)

One time a couple years back Trixie had her first litter and as I as putting food in her bowl she hissed at me. I bent down into her face and hissed back. She gave me lots of blood (mine) and two black eyes. That was before I was full time and had to go to my day job next day. Pretty comical explaining that too. Who's going to believe it? Yea, the door hit you in the face. She tore me to pieces and I chased her with the first freshly sharpened camp knife I ever made. She hide were I could not crawl into. I still got her.

Due to the number of animals I have at home I know very well how it is to try to stop a fight between dogd, cats or both: most possibly you will be the one that will get hurt the most.
I lost count of the number of times I got bit or scratched and have some pretty impressive scars - even worse than the ones I got at the shop!
Gladly, rabies has not been registered over here in the last 30+ years.

My parents breed show cats, so have some very large, un neutered males they keep isolated. I saw two get out and attack each other once and put my hand in the fray to break them up. Its something I would never consider, ever again. People underestimate what a household cat can do when they are in fighting mode. My hand looks like I had put it in a paper shredder. Gotta get a lock on that doggie door!

I've taken to locking the doors at night, and I don't think I'll be trying to break up a cat fight with my bare hands again. At least I hope so. Honestly, I DO know better. If I had been any ways near awake at the time, i wouldn't even have thought of trying it. I would much rather face a pissed off dog than a pissed off cat, especially a pair of them. Way to many sharp pointy things flying around.
Well, I'm home from work today, so I am going to try and do some grinding. I tried yesterday and about 15 minutes of it kicked my ass. I feel like somebody beat me with a stick:rolleyes: Maybe I'll just head back to bed for awhile first:yawn: :D
Much as I may complain about my 9-5 job I do appreciate having things like sick time and regular pay checks....

our FiFi catchs squirrels and bats we've learnd to check her at the door before letting her in. :D I've watched her stock a squirrel and it's something to watch

I almost had to have the shots too back some time ago
but I had the fox head to send in for testing by the State
sure glad the test was NEG :o
I was doing some Taxidermy work on a fox and I wasn't vaccinated, I had a little misshape with the scalpel:o heal well my freind :)

Pretty amazing how those lovable, lazy felines can spring into such violent action. Dogs have become domesticated, cats will never really be it seems. They say cats do not have masters, just servants.:D Stupid guys are always on the wrong side of the door.
The connection between them and their cousin the lion is still very strong I think. If you see how they toy with their prey it is actually quite brutal, and then crunch! The kill.
Still, I love 'em. Very independant, except when they want grub. After they get the food, up yours mate, you can call until you are blue in the face.:D
Get well soon Ed, merry is a beauty.

Mike

Thanks guys. I actually did get some grinding done today. The first of my JS judging knives. Got a great fit on the guard, then realized I have NO solder:grumpy: Have to place an order tomorrow. I'll post when I get it done. Thanks for all the support.

Holy shit...scuse the language but I thought my wife's 20lb Seal Point Siamese was big. Is the angle of that picture to blame or is that one big freaking cat?!
