we hunted 10 miles of the river yesterday after getting on a some smaller alligator gar, about two hours before dark we stumbled into a new gar hole we nicknamed the G spot (George Saber picked the spot) we ended up having a 7 foot gar pick our bait up 5 minutes after we put baits out, it stripped 150 yards of line on the surface where we could see it then it dropped the bait when we got a birds nest, we fished the spot till dark watching 4 or 5 monster gar come to the surface in the hole, need to get back to that area again before they move again, yesterdays trip was a little more like hunting than fishing trying to find the monster gar of a lifetime

Very nice! They need to have fish like that in those TV shows, and not just bass.

btw, I was just watching this video, and I was wondering what your thoughts were on using the lasso approach for landing the fish? Never tried it myself, but it would seem a lot easier to transport than a landing net, cradle, etc. Also, will those rascals hit lures? What do you use for leader?

the lasso is the only way to go on big ones if you want to release them alive, it has to be properly placed though you have to get it over the pectoral fins so the rope doesn't get in their gills.

i do know one guide who uses lures at a certain time of year though i know nothing about it myself.

my leader is a 200 pound swivel, 28 inches of 105 pound single strand wire(7 strand braided wire works to), and a 3/0 Mustad 3551 BR. i also use a slip float. the bait of choice is cut smallmouth buffalo, common carp, or gizzard shad in about 1/2 pound chunks fished on bottom

that dam in the background of that video is lake livingston dam near Houston btw..

Catching one of those fresh water beasts would be the thrill of a life time. Very cool stuff.

Very cool. btw, this is what I found for lures:

btw, how do you keep the catfish from taking your bait?

these are for gar under 50 pounds, if a big gar breaks you off he will die because the nylon wont let him open his mouth, for the monster gar is either bowfishing (something i dont do) or rod/reel with bait

i dont catch catfish much because of the wire i use, only the really big catfish are gonna eat the baits i use and im fine with landing those since they are 30-90 pounds

22-rimfire- they are an awesome fish that can transport you back 100,000,000 years ago to the Cretaceous period, i have seen them push speeds of 25 mph when hooked and launch themselves out of the water repeatedly like a tarpon, they are my favorite fish and im passionate about conservation for them
