I recently traded some knives for a few Spydercos and one was the waved Endura 4!

What an amazing opening method!
My hat is off to Mr. Emerson, and to Sal--what a great collaboration.
My wife liked it so much that I ordered her one (and a waved Delica) from Newgraham knives.

I still think that the old Endura handle shape was better, but the wave does change the nature of the E4 and D4.

Cheers,
Allen.

I had a waved Endura sent to a friend from New Graham. I value my friend's opinion, so I waited a week or so, and asked for his thoughts about the WAVE.

"Well, John, truth is, I can't figure out how to get it out of my pocket WITHOUT opening it. Neat gizzmo."

allenC--I agree that the original handle shape of the E3 was better. Much more appropriate for thumb-capping.

Maybe you should lay off the Sauza while handling the Endura, though.

Just kidding.

Why bother? I can open any Spyderco quite quickly enough for my uses without that gimmick. Further, I don't need something catching on my clothing and opening the blade when I don't want it opening.

FullerH--I think that the "wave" was meant for the fast deployment of a blade in defensive, reactive use. I imagine that your uses are more prosaic, and I actually hope that none of us ever "need" the wave. I agree that the wave feature is occasionally inconvenient in utilitarian usage.

Self-defense with a knife, I feel, is primarily found in response to ambush. Hence, most, if not all, folders are hampered by the opening process, whatever it might be. Thumbhole, inertial opening, whatever, they all require some dexterity. And dexterity is often lost when you are pounced upon. If we can't carry a fixed blade, I contend that the wave is VERY necessary.

Hey Guys...

Fuller...

Although I respect your opinion and have no doubt that you can open a Spyderco as fast as you need to,, I wouldn't go as far as calling it a gimmick..

It's for sure not for everyone, thats why there is the plain standard Endura.

The Wave feature on the WE4 serves it's purpose,, and serves it quite well, just as it does on the Emersons, although the Spyderco Wave is much more reliable IMHO.

It's a fantastic design, and quite frankly is something that is sorely missed on other Spydercos...

I said the same thing (more or less).
Until I got one and played with it some.:D

Funny I should hop on here and see this post. I just started carrying my waved endura after a couple months off, and man do I like this knife! I think the wave is fantastic, and the handle has really grown on me (wasn't a huge fan at first.)

I also think the dimensions of this knife are great. Long blade and fits in the pocket easily...

I love my waved delica, but yes it sucks screwing up a nice pair of jeans. But after getting this delica, my first delica, i really dont like to carry much else.

I couldn't see what the big deal was about the wave until i got a WE4 about a week ago. It's really is the $hit :D Since I got it I have stored my other Spydercos except the SS Cricket which also gets carried.

Initially I thought the standard E was just fine, but the 4 series rocks. Just love the steel liners and the screw fastening. And the wave... AHHHH.... the Wave! Yep, I still think it looks a bit ugly, but function is the key here. I love it. Nope, i wouldn't want to see it on every Spyderco, but I think it's great that they added it to the functional bread-and-butter E4 and D4. I like these knives so much I'm thinking of asking my wife to get me a standard E4 for Christmas.

The handles are a bit narrow for my liking, but you can't please everyone :)

Btw, my first decent knife was a standard first generation Endura with a PE, G2 steel and a FRN clip. The Endura series sure has come a long way since then

Dont forget to mention the awsome color of the wave series!
With a knife that is intended for self-defense, I think concealability is very important. No other color frn, or any material for that matter, better blends in with my jeans/dark slacks the way that the waved D4/E4's dark blue does. I absolutly love how they use a different color. Clip a waved Spydie and a regular black spydie into your favorite pair of blue jeans and see which one just disappears.
