how easily does this knife rust? i`m getting one on thursday and i plan to use it and a pacific salt i`m also planning to ge on thursday for fishing.

so , no one who bought a catcherman ever used it around salt water then?
sorry i`m not trying to a sarcastic bastard , that comment was meant in jest. getting this knife tomorrow , can`t wait.

There are 2 variations of the CAtcherman. I also am surprised that hardly no one cares about them. The 2 you can get are the AUS-8 version which was made from 1992 to 2001. Since then they made them in MBS-26. They switched to MBS-26 because they said you get MBS-26 harder with a very thin blade.

The older AUS-8 model was also at one time made with a yellow handle. Those are quite collectible if you can find them.

Believe it or not I find the AUS-8 version more rust resistant than the MBS-26 version. A lot of guys do like the AUS-8 version better because they say that the blade is stiffer and easier to work with.

Now there is one more variation that is really difficult to come up with and that is the fully serrated version.

I might be a weirdo also but I avoid the newer flexy bladed Catcherman. The collection features one yellow SE unit and two black CE units (both AUS-8A).

IIRC, the Catcherman is the longest folder Spyderco makes

I've always had a thing for having big knives :)

i`m not sure which steel the one i`m buying tomorrow has , but i knows its got a black handle and is partially serrated.

I've had both and found the newer one to be harder to control. Some guys like a really flexible blade though. They can have it. I'll take the AUS8 version over the MBS26 one anyday of the week. There doesn't appear to me to be any real advantage in edge keeping, or corrosion resistance by one over the other. Both are fine for that. I just like the thicker stiffer blade on the AUS8 Catcherman much better. It doesn't tend to go off on its own direction like the thinner one did and I just feel I can handle it better. These are great knives that I was sorely disappointed to see dropped from the Spyderco line up. Get one while you can. They are super users that you can easily run through the dishwasher to clean off.

I'd really like to see them come back out with this model even in limited numbers in the H1steel used in the Salt knives. I use the crap out of mine in the kitchen because they are more than just fillet knives. At least for the thicker ones anyway.

it was actually the mbs26 i ended up getting . didnt get the pacific salt , that`ll be a knife for when i have more money. i still like my catcherman , even if it the lesser steel . thanks for taking the time and effort to answer my questions . by the way , i don`t have a sharpening system and i suck at sharpening , so what do you guys reccomend that would be easy to use?

The Pac. Salt is a good way to go, and should compliment your Catcherman nicely. As for sharpening systems; Spyderco's own Sharpmaker has proven effective even for those of us (me) who can't sharpen a knife to save themselves. http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=77
