It's been a while. This is a somewhat random post, but I thought I'd post an update and try and give Patrice some (probably false) hope that I will touch metal to grinder again soon :D.

The last 3.5 years have been really busy. I switched jobs from treating in the clinic to teaching, and it's been a busy time, though I love what I do. My role at work continues to evolve, and it has kept my interest and challenged my knowledge. As part of it, I started to work on my PhD a few semesters ago, and I have another 4 years ahead of me before I finish in addition to teaching full time.

About 2 years ago, my son was born, and between work, school, my wife, and my boy, free time to work in the shop has been non-existant. In fact, the last knife I completed was over 2 years ago now, just before Noah was born. About a year ago, we built a house, and I was able to consolidate and move my tools to a connected single-car garage shop.

(it's way dirtier now, BTW, from odd projects)

I was hopeful that this would give me the convenience I needed to get to the shop more to build knives. I built a new grinder bench and have done a few odd projects, but I have yet to build a knife there. I actually went out 6-7 months ago and resumed work on a blade I'd promised a friend, but the time-off showed: I ruined the blade as I rushed things in cleaning up the forged bevels. I haven't picked up a piece of steel since. Add to that some mysterious health issues involving my muscles and strength over the last two years, and I had just about put picking up a hammer to forge a blade out of my mind.

I've done a little bit of work on my truck.

And I've bought some more firearms, even made some holsters for them.

But ultimately, my time has been well-spent with my son and wife outside of work.

Now for the hopeful part. I'm starting to get more of an itch. Not a gross STD itch, but a knife making itch. I haven't had it in a while, and it's still not strong, but it's there. In fact, I took advantage of Mark's end of the year sale at Burl Source to pick up some more ironwood and redwood. I have a little stash of decent wood that I need to use, and I think the first order of business is to make a knife for myself. A really nice little EDC. I have kept a grand total of ONE knife for myself in my years of making. That's the reason I think I burned out. I made a decision a while back: I refuse to take orders. I refuse to promise knives. I will only make what I want, when I want to make it from this point on. I'm in a blessed position to be able to do this as a hobby and not to make a living, so I am hopeful that if I stick by these guns, I can slowly crawl my way out of the darkness and into the light of the forge and sparks from the grinder.

Here's to a new year, some new interest, and some new knives. Happy 2013 everyone! May God bless your family, your health, and your wealth.

New shop looks great, truck looks good, guns are fun, and the family looks health, who could ask for anything more!

How about more visits to the wonderful state of Hawaii! Haha. We spent out honeymoon in Kauai and it was amazing. I agree. I am a blessed man in what I have.

Glad to see your post Nathan.
I had been wondering about you.
Great looking shop and beautiful family.

...truck's not bad either.

Good to see you back around Nathan, glad to hear your doing well.

Your Son is a good looking boy there Nathan . It looks like you need to plant a lawn though . :D

What?!? And ruin all of the amazing mudding and donuts I get to do in the truck? Haha...that's the vacant lot next to our house. It's a HUGE lot as it's a strange shape around a bend. I'm scared what someone is going to put up there if it ever sells. :D

Thought I would add...

I went out and forged a blade tonight. :D First time to heat steel in the new shop. So far my arm hasn't fallen off, though I know it will be twitching like crazy for the next few days (those mystery health issues...blah). The funny thing is that my hammer control was better than ever before, even though I haven't picked up a hammer to forge in over 2 years. Also, the blade turned out fairly decent. It's in the forge cooling right now. Good distal taper. Decently centered and formed bevels. The part I've always struggled with most besides bevels was forming the tip. This piece was fully squared on the ends rather than pre-formed like I've occasionally used. I was able to knock the corner in and form the tip easier today. I think the thing that made the difference for me was my frame of mind. I just wanted to enjoy myself, and I was able to catch up at work so I didn't have anything to do tonight. I wasn't in a hurry. Finally, I told myself to just freaking let the hammer swing and do its job rather than trying to tighten up and over-control it or muscle it down too much.

We'll see how it looks in the morning. It's a hunter-sized blade, maybe 4-5 inches long or a bit more in some of Don's W2. I'm going to do a hidden tang, but I'm not sure how I'm going to shape the handle. It's too small for some of my favorite handle profiles....have to come up with something once I get the tang formed and the blade profile cleaned up.

Life's about to get really busy again...

Holy canoli! Are congratulations in order here? :D:thumbup:

I'm going to do a hidden tang...

Woohoo! Let's do the dance of joy! We'll have you doing take downs in no time. ;)
Kidding aside I am really glad to have you back Nathan. But if that great family is what kept you away, it's was more than worth it.

Now maybe you did not receive the memo but progress pics are mandatory now. ;)

Haha...thanks, Patrice. And NO....no more babies right now! One is enough for the time being. :D Busy happens because my students will be back next week and I'll be taking several courses as well.

I'll snap some pictures of the (very) rough forging for you and some more after I get the profile cleaned up. One thing that sucks about my anvil is lack of any decent shoulders. They've all been rounded off or broken off in heavy use before I got it. That makes it nigh impossible to set a decent plunge, so my plunge is more of a suggestion at this point. I'm going to have to do some creative profiling to get the transition to the edge the way I want it. I need to get a decent block of steel and make a hardy tool that I can use similar to a post anvil to set the bevels and clean up flats. Nick suggested that to me a long time ago, and I just haven't followed through with making it.

Welcome back Nathan. Hope your muscle problems get figured out. I was going through the worst pain I've ever experienced last year. I swear even my bones were aching. After a couple thousand dollars in test x-rays etc I had two Dr's tell me I was just working too hard.

Maybe you just need to take it easy? :D I changed how much I work after I got a raise and the pain(mostly) went away. :)

Looking forward to seeing your blade.

I just made a Godzilla fullering tool like Raymond Richard has shown. I used a piece of 1-1/2"x1-1/2"x10" ground to fit the 1-3/8" hardie on my 300# Fisher. I drilled through it and added two 3/4" jaws of 4140. I use the tool to draw out the tang and set the plunge/ricasso on the top of the post.
