Picked up a Catcherman from a friend who has a tackle and Gun Shop. Got it for $39.00. Only one he had. He said it would probably sell for a lot more. It's new in the box. One cool knife.

Which one did you get? Was it the older AUS-8 version or the later MBS-26 version. Both are great.

From a functional standpoint I regard the CAtcherman as a great blade. My personal favorite in that model was an older, fully serrated AUS-8 version that I use for many different cutting chores. It's a jewell in the kitchen and it's also great for processing wild game as well as a fishing gem.

I'm sort of surprised that they haven't brought it back in the new H-1 blade steel. I truly do wish they would come back with a new folding fillet knife. I got to test drive Benchmade's folding fillet knife and I prefer the Catcherman head and shoulder's above it.

The Catcherman truly made it's mark on outdoor knives.

It's not fully serrated. I do a lot of offshore fishing. Have been using a twelve inch knife I bought from Morty the Knife man about fifteen years ago. I like a long blade to fillet Rockfish and Lingcod. I don't like to ram my knuckle into the dorsel fin. It hurts big time. May be a good knife to fillet Hallibut. Will give it a try. Just had to have it, and the price was right.

The blade steel identification will be on the heel of the blade next to where the top of the handle begins. It will either be AUS-8 ( the older one with a somewhat thicker blade) or it will be MBS-26 which is a blade steel that Spyderco used in many of their kitchen/culinary knives. As far as a folding fillet knife I don't think the Catcherman has an equal.

Now until Spyderco makes a fixed blade fillet knife ( and I hope they do soon) I do have a fixed blade fillet knife I was shown recently that I can recommend. Knives Of Alaska has a great fixed blade fillet knife that I was shown recently and I must say I was impressed with.

Both the AUS-8 and MBS-26 variants of the Catcherman both hold an edge pretty good. And like I said it's a great blade for all kinds of meat cutting and food processing as well as for fish. Keep us posted and let us know how it works out for you. >> JD

It's the AUS-8.

If you ever find one that's fully serrated it will be with an AUS-8 blade also. Because as far as I know and I'm 99% certain they never made a fully serrated MBS-26 Catcherman. And I've had at least 6 of each blade steel during my buying, selling and trading days.

That's amazing that a gun shop would have had an AUS-8 model Catcherman on his shelf that long unless he had it in his own collection for a while or he got it in a trade or something. Because according to my records they made them in MBS-26 as far back as 2001.

That just goes to show you that many of these old Spyders are out there in sporting good stores, bait shops, military surplus stores and probably flea markets for that matter. You always want to keep on the lookout. Great find. You'll enjoy that knife for sure. If you decide you don't want it you know one guy here that will deal with you :D Have fun with your Catcherman :)

My friend only goes to his shop for about 3-4 hours a day. He's pushing 80 and a real character. Still hunts and fishes and is a dead-eye trap shooter. He will only sell a gun to friends. Doesn't like strangers coming in. Feels they waste his time. Has a lot of gear on wall and cabnet that's been around for some time. Will not be stocking Spydercos anymore and selling at his old price to friends. Probably four or so left If I ever decide to get rid of it I'll let you know. Want to get out this week for Rockfish and Hallibut but wind is up and seas also. I go in shallow and don't like it when it gets snotty. Nov fifteenth is last day for Rockies until next June. Will start fishing SF Bay and Delta for Sturegon next.

Captron if you do come across another fully serrated CAtcherman I highly encourage you to get one for yourself to go with the one you already have. But if you don't want it or know of another one being available then just let me know. I should have my Gold Membership up and running again by the end of this month at the latest. Or you can e-mail me at joespyder@sbcglobal.net

The Catcherman is a super slendid design and it took me a while to realize just how functional of a design it is as well as the Temperance 1 model. Now both models are indispensible to me. But the full SE Catcherman can do a few chores that are a bit tough for the CE model to do. Please do keep us all posted as to how you do with your Catcherman. I want the newbies to know how great some of their older, discontinued stuff is.

Oh by the way I used my SE Catcherman just last night. I'm finally taking down my garden for the year. We've had a mild autumn so far and some of my stuff was still growing.

My 2 Brussell's Sprout plants were loaded. Now if you've never picked any Brussell's Sprouts you must know that they are kind of a hassle to get off of the main stem. So I took my slender SE Catcherman model to go in and sever each one of the sprouts.

The Catcherman made extremely quick work of the Brussells Sprout plants as well as harvesting my remaining pepper plants. The slender blade is so good for so many food type applications. People need to realize that this model is an excellent culinary knife as well as an outdoor blade.

We need an H-1 Catcherman. Spyderco has been too long without a fillet knife and I think it's high time to consider it in H-1.
