Well as they say....time to thin the herd....so I thought I would do a post as to what the keepers are and what the movers will be or have been...and a brief comment as to why? It would be interesting to see what other peoples opinions are as well....let me say at the outset there are no real "losers" in the knives I have owned....it is just a matter of preference....oh...and a need for some cash! Family requirements...:o

Starting from small to large....

Small:
Movers....
In the past....did this area a while ago because it was an easy choice...moved a DMDC and a CGYG from SY because the Res C handles were a bit small for my hand.

Also moved a BATAC LE which was a hell of a tough knife but was a bit handle heavy for me.

Now thinking of moving my SAR4 LE...the handle still feels a bit over sized for me....but it is a great knife....I just like some others better.

Also thinking of moving a modified Skinny Ash and a Custom shop SJTAC with a serrated swedge. Love these two...need the money really...and there are others I love more.

Keepers...

My two RMD's...one stripped one desert coated...both have the swedge sharpened...the RMD is my favourite Bussekin 5 inch blade.

My 3B2 with a modified sharpened swedge...prefer the black G10 grips on this to the Skinny Ash and it is just that bit smaller and lighter and more suited to my military needs.

My Jackhammer....love the convex edge on this and spent a long time on it and also sharpened the swedge...plus the dull CE finish is useful for me as there is little glare issue...but overall it has to be one of the best looking of all Busse knives in my eyes.

Medium:

Movers...

Moved a spare BBDC FSH which was sold because I can get by without it. I have a Voight Camp knife I may well move and maybe some other none Busse knives.

May move a Camp Tramp but waiting on this one coming to me.

Deliberating over a Basic 9 and DFLE...see keepers below...

Keepers...

Probably got too many in this section as this is where I find my most "useful" Bussekin knives. I have another BBDC FSH....love it and also a desert sage NMSFNO for when glare is more of an issue. I have a SFNO LE which I find a useful compromise "chopper" or light weight chopper but would need to get this BBDC for military use...which seems a shame given the Satin finish but these were offered at a great price and this is a cheaper route than an after market older one.

These three should do it all but I have a DFLE and a Basic 9 which I like for the Res C comfort. The Basic has not been used...it is in good shape and there is always a hurdle to cross about turning a good old school blade into a "user"....the DFLE has had some light use....a bit bigger and heavier than the Basic 9....it is a very well sized and balanced knife....a comparable in size and feel to a SHBM at a sensible price....hard to find as well and is probably well worth keeping but once you go to this size I am tempted to go for my two knives in the large category below. I have put the DFLE and the Basic 9 in the same group as the FSH and NMSFNO because they are lighter than these two....although they are longer than most would consider for a medium sized group.

Large:

Movers....

None that are Bussekin...I have a spare Hossum Retribution which is BBDC and the first one he ever did which is pristine and I plan to sell this. Also have an unused BRK&T Golok. I had a FFBM which I moved as it felt too heavy and I did'nt like the balance.

Keepers...

I have a Satin FBM LE shaped combat finish with Black Linen Mags and a stripped BBDC NMFBM with the same smooth Black Linen grips. Love both of these....they are what Infi and Busse are all about....Bergan carry only but what a great level of performance. My NMFBM knocks spots of everything else I have....and for me is easier handling than the FBM LE Combat....the NMFBM is by far my most used Busse....this is so good and light enough that the Zilla which I think will be a bit too heavy for me is not likely to be bought.

The NMFBM keeps the DFLE and the Basic 9 on the bench as well because if I need something for the work these sized knives do...it is my first choice. It's only competition is my Gransfors Forrest Axe.

That's it really.....very hard to thin down more than this without serious loss of performance in a category and dare I say it "regrets"....

But ideally I could get by with just the two RMD's and the FSH and NMSFNO and my NMFBM. The two desert coated knives for the Sandbox and the other three for Green theatres. Infact I could use the desert coated blades in the Green theatres but that would have me down to no "spares" if anything went missing....and this has happened before...:grumpy:

However just three knives ....one small...one medium...one large...has a certain "Zen" simplicity and attraction to it?:D:foot::eek:

What do you think?

I think I read too much! :D
You want a chopper.
A medium EDC.
and, a small slicer.
There you go!

:D:D:D Easier said than done! But you are right.....what do you have or what would you pick?

I can't possibly digest all that info on a catfish martini. So... going with the thread title.

Small blades: Active Duty (snakeskin Custom Shop), though the Lean Mean I just received is going to give it a big run for its money. Honorable mention goes to the ABA LE. And you're right. The Ratmandu is stellar. I'd love to see that design in INFI.

Medium Blades: SFNO LE has taken the lead in this category, though honorable mention goes to my ASH1 LE, which is a very good all-around camp blade. The saber ground SFNO is just a better chopper. Frankly, if I can go Busse group and not just Busse here, the original Ratweiler is durn hard to beat.

Large Blade: No surprise here for me. Sabre ground FBM SE-07. Great blend of features. Just missing micarta, but its G-10 is pretty unique. Honorable mention goes to the SHBM, which is a better pack blade. An often forgotten, but nonetheless great blade here is the sabre ground Rat Mastiff.

I have struggled with this question for a while now.
And still can't seem to come up with a reasonable answer. :o

That's why you list alternatives and honorable mentions. :p

mmmmmmmmmk. :p

Small blades - Active Duty hands down... BAD to be more specific. love the point and it's placement over the GW, Cultie, and Meaners. But I will give the GW an honorable mention for it's belly.

Medium blades - ASH LE or NMSFNO. You can have all the rest. :o ASH LE has a nice tall blade, chops reasonably well for it's size... all in a nice compact design. I place the Badgers and SAR4s in this group... just don't consider them small. But when using either of these, I find myself wanting to either step up to the ASH LE or step down to the AD. The NMSFNO for when I think I want a little more blade length. I don't have a lot of use time on these... but I love the way it looks, and the way it feels in the hand. Although, I do sometimes think I might as well step up to a SHBM. :p

Large blades - All over the map here. :o :D
My fav right now is the FBM recurve proto. It feels like it has the same weight and balance of the CGs and .270" thick FBMs, but still gives you the nice .310" thick blade. I like the CGs and the .270" thick FBMs for their weight and balance... for times when I'll be using or carrying for longer periods. The FF & NM FBMs for shorter carry and use periods. And last, but not least... the SHBM. Extremely light for it's size and thickness. Much more managable for use on the finer tasks and for carry... less effective as a chopper than the bigger and heavier FBMs, but still VERY effective at chopping tasks.

How's that? :D

I'd be the wrong person to answer this one; I'm a compulsive acquirer. However, as I posted on the SY forum, I think the BADs are Busse's ultimate EDC-class design. They fit my hand well and have a useful length, slicer-thickness blade; you can opt to trade some slicing for extra blade strength by going with an AD instead, but since I'm more likely to use it as a knife rather than a B&E tool, the BAD works for me. You might consider getting a BAD as a smaller-small (from what I hear, you can't EDC in GB, so you couldn't properly call it that), or perhaps you simply don't need anything that small.

Although the 3B2 was tempting, I made the choice to go with an "all FSH" VetDayGanza request, and got a couple of the arctic white FSH with hand-shaped black G10 handles instead (plus a bama clay FSH with machined tan Micarta). I especially like how the the hand shaped G10 handles on that FSH variant feel. I also saw a few FSH at the last Knob Creek with hand shaped Micarta -- they were quite comfortable. Your comments about the 3B2 handles mirror my experience with hand shaped FSH (and NMSFNOs).

Boney AD with its higher Rockwell number. Best Busse slicer I have,
Medium has to be SFNOLE though I love my SJTAC and my Jackhammer is a work of art
Damn, I cannot choose. Three knives are too few; can't do it; Sorry

small: don't have any small Busse's. For me my folders will do:o
would like to have an OD but more for it's "obese" thickness then anything else

Medium: tie between SFNO and Hellrazor

Big: HHFSH (but I've never (mis)used any mistresses:D)

Small: Meaner street... Although I'm looking forward to trying the D2 Vex this hunting season also. There is nothing wrong with the AD (it's great), but I like the 4" blade. The GW didn't do it for me. It is as heavy as an UZI with only 3" blade. Honorable mention goes to the Cultie... great lightweight EDC.

Medium: Sar5... one of my favorites. Comp edge SJTAC deserves honorable mention due to great balance and hiking/camping knife. The Ratmandu is one of the finest designs to come out of the Bussekin shops... love it.

Medium/large: NMSFNO absolutely kicks butt and may be my answer if I could only have one knife. SHSJ is very close to perfection in design. SRKW M9 is a piece of art... absolutely beautiful. The Chopweiler deserves honorable mention. For some reason the ASH's just don't do it for me.

Large: NMFBM is the king. It outclasses the fine FFBM due to the extra length.

The great thing about Busse's is that you can buy em... try em... and if they don't work for you sell em and generally at least break even in most cases.

In small knives category I like game warden, but to tell the truth I wish it had better guard (all small busses have too little guards for me).
In medium category - combat grade BATAC is my favorite blade. I think it's my favorite Busse knife. Great all-arounder.
In large category - I really like NMSFNO. I like it better than the SFNO (although I only had full flat ground version of SFNO - with sabre ground it could be different).
I'm not a big guy so NMSFNO is in large category for me.
Nowadays I more and more think of getting a CGFBM and a FSH. Theycould dethrone the NMSFNO.
