I took the dogs for a semi-urban walk today at a small dog park and then into town for a coffee.

Tent Caterpillars were absolutely everywhere you looked !!!

Lovely pics as always, Pit!

As for the caterpillars, this reminds me of my trip with my high school Senior Field Studies trip rafting through Desolation Canyon this semester. We set up camp A few days in and caterpillars would drop from the trees onto you. It wasn't just once of twice either, it was all the time!! There really was no way around it, the entire area was covered in beautiful trees.
That night, I woke up to a scream when my friend had one land on her face in her sleep :D

Thanks for sharing and reminding me of the good times I had with my friends and teachers this past semester. I never thought that I would say it, but I kinda miss high school...thanks again, please keep these threads coming, it looks like a wonderful time!!

Thanks for the kind comments !:)

These Caterpillars can actually be very damaging, this is a recent article from our local paper~

You are very welcome, thanks for the read, Pit!

You know, I did seem to notice that there were a few trees that seemed to be struggling now that I think of it. There was one particular tree that had silk woven from the trunk up in a vast web that mirrored that of a very productive spider! Hopefully, this can be taken care of without too much damage to the trees. It would be a shame to see an incident like the pine beetle infestation over here in CO.

What in the world are Indian Plums? Are they native or invasive? They look beautiful?

I think they are native buddy, they are tasty but very small and nearly all the size is taken up by the stone so there is very little actual fruit !

Thanks for the pics, Pit. I've seen caterpillars do that here before, but I don't think they looked like that. I can't really remember though.

Sweet, Pit - thanks!

When I saw your post I was thinking a different kind of Caterpillar, naturally considering who provides me with a paycheck. ;^)

best

We have these go through every few years, I remember my dad chopping branches of them off and burning them when I was a kid, 20 years later the forest is still there.... they go along with the emerald ash borer and the Asian long horned beetle and the killer bees. What are you shooting with? a Holga?

My dad did the same thing ,Lop off the branch glug some gas on it and light it up!! I always loved that when I was a kid.

My father did similar - tied a blowtorch to a pole and burned the tents in-place. They're pretty darn flammable. Tent catapillars were a scourge around here in the 80's. A couple of trees in the neighborhood were killed by them.

tent caterpillars are brutal this year. Maybe a good sign of a halfway decent summer coming, but they suck nonetheless. I been cutting them out of our trees and putting them in the kill bucket, but it's hard to keep up.
