In a previous thread I linked a picture and a question as to what I had found... Well several responses later an a visit from a friend here at home I've concluded that this is a grader blade, not a frontend loader blade as this one is "concaved" in the face and one end/edge is worn down substantially. It's marked "CATO" and is about seven feet long. So, I did to usual Cro-Magnon bladesmith thing and cut off about five inches from the end, ground it, and edged quenched it. This stuff came out perfectly hardened! I'm going to do what was suggested and send off a small piece for testing. I've got five of these blades, all 1/2 thick! Kelly Cupples, a really nice fellow, told me of a place in Washington state that will test mystery steel for $25.00 and I think I'll take them up on it. I've got enough material here for a consistent number of knives and a thickness that I love to work with. I think I'd be worth it. Are there any other good steel testing outfits out there you guys know of?? I live near Houston Texas....
