This should have stayed in G&G. ;)

Maybe not,
Yes, I am interested in gadgets,
but I'd also like to know the experiences of cat owners, and this might not have anything to do with gadgets.

You know where this topic is gonna lead to. It's gonna end up with everyone telling you what they use and stuff they do to prevent cats from urinating. But I will let it stay....for now. ;)

PS: Edited the title to more Community friendly term.

Neutering, un-scented "clumping" litter which you should sift through at least every other day, and one litter box per cat. (I have two cats, so I have two litter boxes.)

If they aren't litter-trained at all, put them into the litter box and gently rub their front paws in the clean litter, in a digging motion. Cats are generally intelligent enough to figure it out within a couple days.

Also, don't use any ammonia-based cleaning products; if the cat has messed up a rug or carpet, clean it with a pet-stain remover. And don't ever punish the cat; they won't understand what they're being punished for and that will only cause the cat to be afraid of you, causing further problems.

Good luck!

Clip him.... That'll show you mean business :D

some cats just don't get it.

i have close to 10 cats at home. most of 'em are fine but there's one ...BLACKIE...we've tried everything...we clipped him and he started peeing even more...

sometimes it depends on the other cats around the area as well...if there's more than one cat they'll try to mark their territory since they feel threatened.

now Blackie is on a leash. so when he's going to pee just tug on him and move him along. hehehe

Done and Done.
My parent have tried quite a lot of different things.
and have consulted the entire vet's office.
the Feliway suggestion sound like an idea. others?

If the problem has just recently come up with a cat that was doing okay to start, have the cat checked for a urinary tract infection.
Other than that, Ashes had the right answers.
Clipping a cat after they are of reproductive age does no good. If nothing else, it pisses them off...

We found a spray that contained lemon grass extract that really seemed to work. Apparently the cats find that scent very unpleasant, even though humans find it rather nice and clean smelling.

Not quite what I meant... I'd explain in detail, but don't feel like harassing/irritating/annoying or whatever it would be K.V. He's a cool guy :D ;)

Here's a product to prevent feline urine marking. It's called Feliway, and it's available at most pet supply houses:

http://www.vpl.com/cgi-bin/vpl.cgi/100483.html?id=AaGGoDdI

We have a Feliway plugin to help de-stress the cats (home improvement freaks them out and they spend all their time clawing things up and knocking things over). I don't have any experience w/its effectiveness with marking, but it's indicated on the page linked to above. Basically, it makes your house smell like cat face (but it's odorless to humans). It solved the behavioral problems our cats were having. At our vet the diffuser cost around $35.00 IIRC, and the monthly refills are $18.00.

Ashes is dead on with her litter box advice. You need one regularly-cleaned box per cat, and clumping litter makes cleaning quick.

Cats dislike citrus scents, so perhaps an orange-scented cleaning spray or air freshener sprayed on the problem areas would help, also. If they're peeing all over the place, then it probably won't work at all, but if there's a specific area they use it's worth a shot.

Ya might want to bring the cat to the Vets, inappropriate urination can be a bad sign about the health (urinary tract health that is) of your cat. Some cats can suffer from reoccuring bladder, or urinary tract infections. Others can develop uroliths or what is reffered to as "stones", these can be life threatening if they "block" or obstruct the cats urethra. Also consider kidney problems, and/or diabetes. That being said, if the cat checks out ok health wise, we use a product called Natures Miracle. Works well on dog urine.
