one week ago i knew nothing about Schrade, even though i have about 80 or so knives (actually more). well, a week of reading in this forum, a few posts and some helpful replies and i have definitely ncaught the Schrade bug. i just made my first ebay Schrade purchase. it's an older 125OT, custom work on scales, used but not abused, non stainless (i think as stamp is Schrade ). i don't mind the custom work, probably a gift; and carried means he liked it. i like knives like that. the shield has been removed so i would like to replace it if someone can tell me which shield and who may have one in their parts bin.
i'll try to post the ebay link, as living in Canada, it will be awile before i have the knife (Canada Customs delay) to take pics. of. roland
p.s. unable to get link to work; # is 130109868294 if anyone wants to take a look. i'll try link again later

Very different, it reminds me of the kentucky rifle stockman, nice find.

The shield would mount right where the engraving is, I would think you might not be able to remove the J W G enough to make it look like a standard 125OT. please let us know when you get the knife.

Welcome to the madness, rproctor! I feel better now that I am not the only Canadian (British Columbian) active Schrade collector!!

I would agree with Rusty about the shield.

I also find that the custom work makes it a more interesting piece. Now, that being said, I would probably not want to carry a knife with somone else's initials on it, unless it were from a relative or something.

Maybe a replacement of the mark side scale, one of our members does some fine custom work, if you are not handy.

Welcome, and don't be a stranger...

thanks for the encouragement. this is definitely the friendliest forum around.
rather than trying to remove the J W G , if i would prefer to locate the correct shield and glue it on, or find a scale with a shield and mount that (hopefully with advice from those with experience).
so if anyone has spare parts they would like to pass on, or trade please contact me. if no luck, i'm sure i'll still enjoy the knife the way it is.
p.s. got a 4 pin LB7 with case on ebay last night, i expect it to have numbers on the bolster too. v. nice and all for $12.50 !

rprocter,
Welcome to the addiction. Soon you will become a Schradaholic. Then it will advance to full blown Schraids! There is no cure! :D

I have a Craftsman version of this knife coming from ebay. It appears to have a blank shield on the mark side. I bought the knife with the intent of customizing it, so I will eventually be replacing the handles. The Craftsman handles look like the Schrade handles, or very close.

I will know more when I get the knife here, should be this week. I think the handles will fit without any modification.

If you are interested in having me change them let me know.

John Wayne Gacy was a serial killer (33 known victims). as my knife has a lanyard hole it was made in 1971 or 1976 to 1991 and his last victim was 1978, it could have been his knife. now i have to get a shield or replace the scale; or lie and sell it as definitely his knife. murderers knives or guns sell for BIG bucks.

it's getting worse. i just bought an LB7, 3 pin with a serial number beginning with either O or D (with case) which looks to be excellent condition. what next ? roland

One more Schrade and it will be the point of no return, the vortex is getting tighter and tighter. We've all been there not many have escaped.

This is one of the worst most rapidly advancing cases I have seen in many years! He has already at the point of Schradeaholic. Full-blown Schraids is probably less than half a dozen purchases away. He will probably be there within the week.

rprocter,
For the safety and protection of your fine collection, I suggest that you take out a will, and will all of your collection to me. :D You are obviously terminal. :D

Seriously, it is a fun hobby and a great addiction, that doesn't give you a headache in the morning. Although, it is often a pain in the wallet. ;)

Enjoy Schrade collecting,
Dale

Look for the infection to spill over into the Schrade cousins like Imperial, Ulster, and Keen Kutter.

I've even got a little bit of that Camillus working in my blood as well.

I started with wanting to simply replace an Old Timer 108OT back in September. I've got well over 100 knives now, and I'm a little territorial over each damn one of them.

Soon you will likely feel that unexplainable pull your automobile has when it sees a hardware, sporting goods, or farm store. Nervous twitches will happen when you see a garage sale with an old man sitting in the garage with a table of tools (and maybe knives).

My point of no return was when I kept seeing something called BladeForum in most of my Google searches for Schrade information. Once I found out what that was, it was then the beginning of the end.

I credit (not blame) all of you at that point.

perhaps fortunately, the hardware & farm supply stores here in B.C. don't carry Schrade. so if i can find the time, a little trip to northern Idaho or Washington would be fun to look for those stores.
next up an 897UH; and i do need to learn about Camillus, Keen Kutter, and the others. i really enjoy all aspects of knife collecting, and the fantastic support and information of the forum members. roland

You will know you are a Schradephile when you set the Schrade forum as your home page and you have a 171UHBH as your wallpaper.Arnold

i just got what looks like an older (v. old?) 897UH in v. good condition (hard to be sure as seller seemed to specialize in cosmetics), for $10. so many 897 owners have posted how this model is just about the perfect balance of everything. so, i guess i'll need a couple more. so now i have 6 (2 from way back and 4 coming: 125OT, LB 7, 4 pin with #'s, LB7 3pin with #'s and an 897) and i still want more even though i have not yet had a chance to see/hold/fix up/ use, any of these ebay "treasures".
not sure why i have been so taken in by Schrade instead of Case, or Queen, or Bulldog, etc., but i think the friendly attitude of Schrade forum members is a big part of it. plus, i'm not married so i can spend my kids' (4) inheritance any way i want. neither my dog nor my 20 month old daughter object. (Isabella's favorite knife is a Case tiny trapper in 6.5 bonestag, i'll have to find a small Schrade or UH for her so she can join the club too.)

Not long ago, I saw my partner pull out a "whooped" 897UH to use at work. I inquired about it and it had been his grandfather's old knife, broken blades and all. The next day I presented him with a new 897UH and told him to retire the heirloom. Previous to his producing the 897UH, all I had seen him use was lightweight imported single blade cheapies. I think he appreciates the difference in both utility and quality now.

Last week, my own 897UH was left on a jobsite fifty miles away. Luckily, the homeowner is a UPS driver, so I expect it to return any day now. Luckily, I was able to reach into my stash and pull out another NIP clampacked 897UH to EDC without missing a beat (clampacks have their place!). Yes, I use my 897UH hard and daily in my construction work. Plumbing, wiring, opening boxes and plastic packaging, cutting .27 mil. vinyl pool liners, even scraping PVC glue from my hands and opening the mail. Hmm... maybe I need to find a few more to put back. I'm down to a dozen or so. :D
