After looking at all the pictures on opinel knives and reading some reviews, I finally decided to get one myself. I've handled a few in the past but they were always a tad too large for my taste so I ordered a number 7 with the inox stainless steel. I don't know about the makeup of inox, but it is one of my favorite steels! Thank you to our French (and Swiss) buddies who know a good steel. As for the knife as a whole, it is extremely light, yet it still feels solid in my hands. Opening the blade is a smidge tighter than I expected, yet still not as tough as some of my other slipjoints, and the lock on it is more stable than I would have expected. This has already been in great service to me in the last few days. I was having a potluck with my coworkers in our buildings communal kitchen, and as expected in our kitchen there is only a butter knife, but nothing to cut with. As there was me and 5 others all making food, having the little knife around proved to be very useful. The only issue was that after washing the knife, the wood in the handle swelled a tad which made it hard to open or close, but nothing that was the end of the world. despite the woods natural disposition, it is rather sturdy material AND customizable! At the price and material, opinel makes for one of the best utility knives that allows one to buy a couple to fiddle around with. These may become a future gift to some of my co-workers. Thanks for the rant everyone!

I have a No. 8 in olive wood. I don't carry it enough. I have to remedy that. they are great knives.

They're great knives.
I think some people put vaseline in the joint to prevent swelling from moisture. They'll correct me it I'm wrong.

You will get more. They are slightly addictive.
My No 8 got a little ... "damp" ... once while in its leather slip. Required pliers to open it, and even then it was a struggle.
A few hours stuck in one of the heater vents dried it out nicely. Used the defroster to dry out the leather slip.

You will get more...trust me.

They are slicing demons. I believe their inox is 12C27 modified.

I don't know about the makeup of inox,

"inox" means "stainless". Obviously, the term applies to many alloys.
Opinel uses "Sandvik 12c27-MOD Stainless steel (acier inox)"
http://www.opinel-usa.com/pages/opinel-steel-blades

Sandvik 12C27M has a composition reasonably similar to 420HC
C___0.52%
Cr__14.5%

The good part is that Opinel takes the steel to a hardness of 58. Same as Buck.

This provides a steel which takes a fine edge but does not deform easily. So it holds an edge reasonably well.

Opinel is a good choice. Congrats!
