15 years ago, I used to whittle a bit while walking down the beach. I had no talent, bad knives, poor sharpening techniques, but I enjoyed the feel of whittling. Unfortunately I got away from whittling and didn't go back.
Over the last few months I decided to get back into whittling but decided to get better knives and learn how to sharpen better. I tried a few things and eventually ended up whittling spoons and driftwood. The knives I used most for this were the Mora 120 and Mora 106 - great for wood carving, but not pocketable.
Thought it would also be useful to have a pocket knife for the beach so I picked up a Rough Rider Lockback Canoe which worked very well. So I started carrying it every day instead of just when I went out to the beach.
I was surprised to realize how much I started using it. I never realized how many times a day I ended up opening packages and cutting things and had to walk into another room for scissors or a utility knife. But with the knife in my pocket, it was a great tool that started to get a lot of use.
I wanted to give my son who does a lot of web design work for me a thank you gift. He does a lot of hiking so I thought I would get him a pocket knife to carry. I did a lot of research in this forum and on YouTube and settled on the Ontario Rat 2 as a great value, good quality, light knife he could carry easily.
The knife arrived today so of course I had to try it out The moment I held it open on my hand, I knew I was hooked! It fit great in my hands and cut amazingly well. While I like my RR pocketknife, this just felt more robust and a more serious tool. I realized I was going to have to order a second one for myself!
So I think I caught the bug and I doubt it will stop at just the second one!
