Gearing up for Shot Show next week, but that doesn't mean i can't work while I play.
After checking out a road with the word" Cave" in it, we found the cave, right next to the road. It had alot of trash up in the front of it, near the big galleries, but once it got into real crawling territory, you could tell Cletus and his friends didn't want to venture where they had to crawl and get muddy. I could tell the spots where the real spelunkers went, and used those to get away from the trashy areas. We came back the next day with my caving gear and checked the place out hard. 5 hours and we still didn't check out everything.

There is WNS (white nose syndrome) found in the county, so I disininfected our caving gear before going in. It had not been used in a long time anyway. I have a sneaky suspicions the Bats already had it though, I couldn't tell due to the frost, I'll be monitoring it in warmer weather. It was neat testing out the different flashlights in the cave, but the small tight spaces made me wonder what I would have to deal with if I had to use primitive lighting. Crawling and torches just don't mix that well. Sure cavers did it with carbide lamps, but those were usually on their helmets.

A few day hikes as well turned up some fun stuff. Once again, very impressed with the snow tires coupled with the AWD in the Subaru. I'm glad that the new skidplate I installed kept alot of salt from the road off the engine but I'm wondering if there is a suction affect on the plate, in the snow. It didn't seem like it, and I was happy it was there when I ran over a rock that was hidden on the snow covered dirt trail. It was great taking that boy, Matt out, as well. He had been on some other adventures and these were both first times for him as well. He can't wait to get back to school (snow days) to brag to his friends. Kinda like I am, now :P I LOVE MY NEW CANON G-12~!~~~~!!!!!

Knife of choice for caving, for me at least, is something flat like an Izula. There isn't much in the way of carving, but more or less cutting ropes, etc.

Cool cave. I like spelunking as long as snaking through narrow passageways is not involved.

Awesome Joe! I've been on a bunch of cave tours and in a bunch of caves but never explored one like that solo.

There is a 30 mile long wide dirt road out here in Ca. that I'd like to take that Subaru on. :D

That looks boring. I'm glad I'm sitting indoors, at work, watching the clock. :)

I love cave exploring but I've never been in one that big. I'm used to crawling on my belly, swearing after a bumped head or 6, and being dissapointed at finding a dead end.

Can you tell i'm a little jealous?

Man I miss spelunking! Back when I was young and stupid my friends and I would go through some insanely dangerous caves with nothing but mag lights, canteens, our knives, some beef jerky, and old crappy rope. It wasn't until years later that I did it right and realized how unprepared and stupid we were. Looking back it's a damn miracle we are alive.

there was PLENTY of crawling and some insane holes to go through, but i didn't grab my camera out at that point. Plenty of head banging and cussing too. Made me miss my helmet I used to use

Cool little trip!

I used to do a bit of spelunking when I was younger. I'm afraid I wouldn't fit through all those small holes anymore, though...

Love this photo

Cool.... looks like a great adventure.

I need to get a skid plate for my '09 Forester. Do you like the Primitive version? Do you have to remove it to change your oil filter?

Stay sharp,
