Anyone got any experience? where to buy? how to use? what's the best combo...

I wanna talk to a friend about 15 miles away, but it would be nice to be able to talk to someone 500 miles away as well.

I used to be really into CB radio, which culminated into me eventually getting a ham radio license. I think that's what happens to a lot of people who start out in CB radio. I strongly suggest getting a good SSB (single sideband) rig. Using SSB will give you much greater range and less interference. Even a well set-up mobile unit should be able to talk @ 15 miles in SSB, depending upon the terrain and such. What most people end up doing is modifying a 10 meter ham rig, or an "export" model. I wouldn't even fool with a linear, although what is widely known as the "Palomar" 225 series amps seem to be quite popular. I'm not even going to discuss any legal ramifications; I assume you're familiar with the FCC guidelines so I won't turn this into a legal discussion. That being said: whatever you get, make sure you don't use it on frequencies you aren't authorized to use, such as the ham frequencies. I think a very well made rig is the Ranger 2950dx, here: http://www.rangerusa.com/rci-29dx.html Also a lot of CB'ers use converted ham radio HF transceivers such as the ones made by Kenwood or Yaesu.

It is illegal and sadly the FCC doesn't go after people like Copper. The amps since they are not legal are usually putting out garbage and that interference often gets blaimed on legal hams. If you want to do DX then join the ranks of us hams. Then you can do real DX to the other side of the world , places like Australia etc.
