I'm 39 now, but when I was a teenager my friends and I had CB radios in our cars, and even in our homes, had a blast with them. Used to sit by the ocean and "skip" across the bay.
The new fad is cheap, Piece of ______ 2 way radios working on the UHF FRS and GMRS band. They're advertised for 8 miles, but can't go across 8 city blocks. When you read the ERP report on FCC websites, they're barely 1 watt. Worst of all, theres a 70$ licensing fee for each. (Though NO ONE pays attention to that)
Even with a cellphone, a Treo-650, and a Blackberry weighing me down, I wouldn't leave home on a longer trip without my trusty Cobra 40-channel CB radio.
BTW, can anyone recommend a good magnetic-mount center-loaded antenna?
I remember the mid '70s when the custom van craze was in full swing, we all had CBs. I'm about to buy a Cobra 75 for my Rubicon, seems a lot of the people running off hiway use them.
