I'm seriously thinking about picking up this vest. Haven't used one for hiking, camping, fishing, etc. etc. in years. I just like the idea of always having necessary gear on you and am certainly happy with Filson's no b.s. warranty. Anyone have one? Anyone know of a similiar vest but one that is shorter? Let me know your thoughts on this vest or others if you get a chance.

I can't comment on the vest, but if you want one buy it now. Apparently Filson has passed into new hands and the word is that production is moving overseas to help lower costs.

Say it aint so!

I hope it isn't true. I should have added to my original post that I don't know this to be a fact. Only what has been discussed on other forums.

Well, if Filson is moving overseas, they've lost me as a customer and if more would do the same for all these danged companies that put citizens out of work by moving overseas or south of the border, they might decide it'd be worth moving back here. If it don't say *Made in USA* I've made the decision that I won't own it and if that means I have to buy used and pay more, I will.

I've heard nothing til now about Filson moving production overseas but it's something I'm glad I now know. I've bought alot of Filson stuff, infact most of what I've bought from them I've purchased in the last year. I don't have this vest but everything I've bought from them is very strong and very durable. Great gear IMO.

Aslong as they continue to give the same quality service and products, I don't care where it's made.

What's making them do it is the anti-business environment in this country. Government regulation of business has become so onerous that it is impossible to make a profit while offering a reasonably priced product. It will get worse before it gets better.

In rereading the thread on another forum, the overseas portion seems to be from reading between the lines. Here is an article that was posted.

I may have spoken too soon by saying overseas :footinmou , but I'm not sure how else to interpret the article. Sounds like they want to pull an Abercrombie & Fitch. I hope this is all an over reaction, and they make it even better.

I also remember when North Face was bought out by a similar group, though I think they were based in Japan. They still made some good stuff, but they made a lot of inferior stuff with the same logo on it. I think they have changed hands since that.

I emaild Filson yesterday and got a reply that currently all of thier products are made in the US. They didn't say anything about moving.

When I was a kid, my dad used to take me to the real Abercrombie & Fitch in New York City. The store was an outdoorsman's paradise. The gun room was just amazing. If I'm not mistaken, they gave Bob Loveless his first contract for hunting knives. It's pathetic what the grand old name has been reduced to.

Sorry to drag up such an old thread but I remembered posting in it and wanted to update some of what I said.

Talked to my local Filson dealer today and he cleared up some of what has been going on with Filson. There are now two different Filson lines. There is the traditional stuff that is still made in the Seattle area, and will hopefully remain unchanged.

Then there is the Lodge line of Filson clothing, which may be made other places. It is also sold as "collections" like most other brands do. In other words what the Filson Lodge line sells one year may not be sold again. The local dealer told me that it was hard not to laugh when the rep when was showing them the Lodge stuff. He told them they had no interest in carrying it.

Check out the Filson webiste and look at some of the Lodge stuff. It tells whether it is imported or not. It looks to me like they are trying to maintain the Filson prices on some stuff that is imported.

Here is a pretty good, and long, article about the changes.

The Lodge stuff seems aimed at pseudo outdoorsy people with lots of money. No stinky waxed finishes, lots of leather and lambswool, rugged styling but not build quality.

They have made a couple of changes to their regular line. Took the interior zippers out of a few coats so you can no longer zip in a liner vest. Their full double tin hunting coat is gone, or maybe a custom shop item. Small changes but I haven't notices a drop in quality, and I am an unabashed addict of their stuff. I'm still glad I already have all I need because I can see a day when it will fall off in the interest of growing the brand.
