In addition to pistol targets, frisbees and throwing disks, what other survival uses can you think of for these (besides batoning tree stumps ;) I suggest light signal reflectors (sunlight or flashlight) and trail markers. Other ideas?

True enough! It's crazy, but I use mine for music playback and data storage.

Seriously, I've used them as an ad hoc mirror to read serial numbers off the back of equipment--because they scatter light pretty well, you can use them at weird angles and still make out those tiny little letters.

I heard they're kinda crappy as signal mirrors, they dont reflect light very far.

A friend once sprayed one with WD-40 and then it on fire and threw it into a wall where it stuck and almost set the house on fire. I guess it can be used in a mall ninja emergency.

When broken they can be pretty sharp.

Hey--- now that *is* interesting to me. I've noticed that too, but never put the ideas together. Can they be used to skin or sharpen? Could they cut?

Great! I've got another experiment to try. Thanks for the idea--I have to mess with this.

If you can made a cutter out of a credit card, why not a CD? I don't think they're going to let us ride airplanes any more.

some of us will make a weapon out of anything, and others of don't even need weapons other than ourselves in most situations.

I just tried to snap a Maxell CD-R in half and it was impossible. It doubled right over and when I released it, it returned to dead flat. I tried to sharpen the edge with a wood rasp and that just got messy. Then I tried a disk grinder (no pun intended) and the edge just burred right over, too fast and hot a grind for the material. Using enough brute force, I probably have enough of an edge to cut a piece of fruit with (I'll wait until my wife gets out of the kitchen, I don't want her to see this). There has to be a way...I'm just not thinking enough outside the box. The hole in the center is almost 5/8, almost big enough to go on the arbor of my radial arm saw...but what could I do with it then? Should I try other brands, besides Maxell?

ohoisin, those free AOL discs were what I had in mind originally. I like the tins they send them in, but otherwise have no use for AOL. Update: I finally snapped the Maxell disc. It did not shatter like glass and there were no sharp edges. It was actually kind of boring.

Just put a Memorex under a heat gun, you can shape it some like Kydex. If it gets too hot, it will snap. Sort of smelled like burning hair, got kind of crinkly looking. Don't know what kind of fumes were coming off. Probably won't do that again.

I think these CDs are pretty tough stuff. A good craftsman with a table-top jigsaw could probably cut out some really nice and very striking inlays.

Any other ideas?
