I was thinking about just leather wrap and epoxy for my handle but I've since decided against it. Was wondering if cedar would be good for handle scales or is it too soft of a wood? Here is my first design. I posted this pic in my other thread so if that's a no-no mods feel free to delete it

It is far too soft. If you really want to go bottom dollar, oak or maple are the cheapest usable woods. But you can get cheap exotics like Bubinga or bocote for 5-6 dollars.

ebay
or a piece of fire wood

This isn't a joke. I have some beautiful spalted alder and figured maple that came off the wood pile at our cabin. I also picked up three big chunks of butternut (white walnut) off the free section of craigslist. Cut into the crotch of one and I have some great looking wood with all sorts of flame through it. Once I started building flutes I started looking at wood in the forest differently. Figuring out what caused different looks. The more gnarled and twisted a branch or log is the more likely it will have interesting grain inside.

I have also seen some very nice hard wood come from pallets. They are often made of hard wood and sometimes you get some exotic wood if the pallet is from other areas. I've seen some very beautiful stave styled drums made from pallets.
