I tend to lurk here in W&SS, but enjoy and benefit from everyone else's postings. I'm in a great mood having rec'd my long-awaited Skookum this week, so I'm having a little giveaway to celebrate.

The prize: an inexpensive, but interesting, unused Blackjack Grunt. I've never put this through its paces, but Pitdog seems to like his. It comes with the standard nylon-type pouch sheath and a kydex Scrapyard sheath that I "adjusted" using a hair dryer to better fit the Grunt. It's not pretty, but it holds the knife well.

Also, I'll throw in a couple small aluminum boxes (4 3/4 x 3 x 1 1/4 "), suitable for PSKs.

Pics of each are below.

To win, guess the animal: years ago, while backpacking in the Gros Ventre, we spooked a few of these while hiking in the Brewster Lake area. We were about a 100 yards apart when we spotted each other.

Be specific (this is a wilderness forum) - e.g. what type of rhinoceros? White, Black, Indian, Javan, Sumatran?. Latin is not necessary (but will surely "up" your trail cred).

First correct answer wins - all shipped to your door.

Regards,
Rebelder

Perhaps the Rocky Mountain elk! :D Cervus canadensis, also known as wapiti.

I have no idea where that is but I will thank you for the giveaway and guess at a black bear (Ursus americanus) as it is what I would most like to see running away if I was out in the woods :)

I was going to say Big Horn too, but will go with American Buffalo. Not the same thing as bison. :)

Peace out.

REKCUT nails it.

We were climbing Dawson Peak, the top of which is wide and flat (maybe 100 yards by 200 yards), and as we came up over the lip, three Bighorn saw us just as we saw them. They took off at a full run and ran over the side. It was amazing that they could move down the sheer face that quickly.

REKCUT - congratulations. If you send me your mailing address, I'll get the goods out to you on Monday.

Thanks Everyone.

Were they Stone, Dall, Rocky Mountain or Nelson/Desert Bighorn? [I don't know the location of Brewster Lake.]

They were Rocky Mountain Bighorn. The Gros Ventre range is just East of Jackson Hole, Wyo. Good hiking country with lots of wildlife, though not as spectacular as the Wind River Range or the Tetons.
